I finally got a chance to run by a local range to see if this old gal worked or not. I had 50 rounds of Federal 230 gr ball, 20 rounds of Federal 230 gr JHP and 20 rounds of Magtech 165 gr SCHP. I'm pleased as heck to report that all ammo fed and fired fine (with one exception that I'll touch on in a bit). As you can see from the accompanying pics, it took me a few mags worth of ammo to settle down and start shooting straight. Once I did get in the groove, though, I started to feel pretty good about the way she handled. This target isn't anything to really brag about, but I'm working with a severely damaged right shoulder, so I'm happy with it. I'm sure that if I could get off my lazy duff once in a while and do some pushups, the groups would shrink dramatically! I noticed a bit of primer wiping on the fired shells - that's okay. I've already got a service pack on order from Wolff Gun Springs.

Now for the bad news. It seems that of the two factory magazines that came with the gun, I've got a "good mag" and a "bad mag". I had three failures, all from the same magazine. Twice it failed to lock the slide back, and I had a hood jam once. On the slide lock failures, I noticed that the magazine follower was slipping past the slide lock without raising it. The hood jam came on the last round of the magazine. Looking really, really closely, I can see how the follower in the "bad" magazine is just a R.C.H. out of place when compared to the "good" magazine. I don't know if there's a source for new magazine followers, but if I ever feel froggy, I may just break out the needle-nose pliers and try to make the followers match. Until then, I'll keep the good magazine in it, and use the bad magazine as a reload (since I have every intention now of making this my new CCW gun). I figure that since all the failures came either on the last round, or after the last round had already been fired, I'll be out of ammo by the failure point. I'll just use the gun as a set of brass knuckles if I need to...

(Good mag on the right, bad mag on the left)

Thanks for the report, What are you going to do about the bad mag?

I had an officer model once. Would not work worth a gosh darn with any blue steel mags I had but worked perfectly with the SS ones.

Probably see if I can tweak the follower so it's the same as the good one. I'm working a gun show this weekend, so I'll be looking for a couple new mags anyway.

Hey! I just bought one just like that- series 80, circa 1985. Twice to the range, and loving it.

Where you at?

I *think* he means that the round ends up pointing up, tip jammed against the hood.
Yup. The hollow point ended up jammed against the upper rim of the chamber. Racked the slide and the round popped free and bounced off the bench and across the line into no-man's land. (Sigh. Another dollar misspent...)

I'm not a big fan of the 1911 so I'm not going to any birthday parties this year in celebration of it's beginnings. That said, I still own one single 1911-type pistol--a Colt Officer's ACP. I found I could shoot this little .45 better than the full-size models. Go figure.

I don't shoot it much and I never carry it. But I will probably hold onto it forever. As for magazines, I use Chip McCormick and Wilson Combat mags. Both brands seem to be very reliable in the Officer's model.

Funny had a couple of different 3" 1911's and none worked worth a crap. I have an SA Ulta Compact Loaded (their "Officer" model) with a 3.5" barrel and it has over 1700 trouble free rounds through it. It works fine with the mags that came with it. But I like Wilson mags. It's a real sweetheart! A buddy has an old banged up, pos looking Colt Officers model that works every single time. So small 1911's can work. And they make one heck of a summer carry gun. BTW mine is all steel. I think that's a good thing in such a tiny gun firing such a big round.

CeeTee-

Not getting any further south this trip, so any idea of a side by side range trip doesn't work. Too bad.

Mine's running great, with both colt mags I got with it, and the MecGar 8 rounders I have for my full size, with any ammo I put in it so far (PDX, Golden Saber, WWB Ball, Hand Loads with Berrys and XTP, all 230 grain).

Have fun with it- Loving mine!

Thanks. Hey, I have to say that I had a blast (literally) shooting those Magtech all-copper hp's. The recoil was indeed brisk, and the muzzle flash was quite attention-getting. You should try a box, if for no other reason than to say you did it.
