Here is the feature request that I sent the company who makes MotionX GPS for the iPhone and iPad.

I am requesting a feature that would draw a radius around the current location or a point of interest or dropped pin. the radius could be dragged to a certain distance or could be set to a predetermined distance, i.e. "Draw circle with a radius of 200 yds with center at current location". This would be helpful for many different users of motionx gps, namely, hikers looking for a direct route to a certain landmark, or hunters who are trying to get a range estimation to input rough ballistics estimates. I am sure that there are many more uses and implementations for this idea and to the best of my knowledge, there is not another app that will do this (or else I would have bought it and not written this message :)

Does anyone know of another app that does this? I have checked a few, but there are so many. I know I could just buy a range finder, but I would rather drop $3 on an app than $300 on a rangefinder.

I just got a reply from the developer and they said that the feature I am requesting is already implemented on the iPad version of their app. I guess it is not about having a good idea, but rather having a good idea first. They also said that the feature might be able to be added to their iPhone/iPod touch app in the future.

Cabelas has an app called Recon Hunt that does what you want. It has a function call "Kill Zone" that draws concentric circles around your location. The zone can be adjusted via slider from 20 to 550 yds. The app can download the US Topo maps. I have it and it appears quite nice, although I have not used it much. It's an iPhone app but I run it on a iPad.

Sounds like a good idea for people to define the 1000 foot "school zones" too.

Fantastic! That is almost exactly what I need :) The only place that it did not meet up with my idea was that the radii can only be drawn from the current location of the device and not a waypoint or a dropped pin. Shouldnt matter too much, I wanted to be able to plan out ahead of time but I am going to write the developer and request an expansion of the feature. Thanks Pete47!
