Cabela's released a hunting GPS based app for the iPhone a while back that included maps with current location, topo maps and a ton of other useful features, including my favorite "kill zone" which gives you a range radius from your current position so that you can find range without a rangefinder. Not super precise but probably good enough out to 300 yds for coyote sized game and larger.

Now for the good part. Last night I was searching for a way to find digital maps to find where I could hunt on public land and I came very close to buying an annual subscription to KMLers.com (maps of public land that show up on google earth) for $40 when I noticed that the Cabela's app had an update ready to download. I checked the new features and they announced that they were including public land maps for select states (AZ, CA, CO, ID, MT, NM, NV, OR, UT, WA and WY) that showed BLM, National Parks, Indian land, private, etc. The map upgrade will cost $10 annually but it should be worth it. I can't believe my good luck :)

But will it work in areas without cell coverage or spotty coverage?
Yes, sort of. The phone has GPS signal independently of cell coverage and as long as it can see the sky. While you have cell or wifi coverage, the maps can be preloaded by viewing the areas you intend to hunt. the app will store roughly 75,000 acres of maps in the cache if you adjust the default settings in the app. I used it this morning trying to locate some yotes in the mountains east of San Diego - it was fun to use and helpful for ranging.
