What would be involved in making a full-size New Uzi an SBR. From a tech standpoint should be an easy barrel swap, but am unsure of the legalities in FL.

Step 1. Check Florida law to see if they allow SBR's.

Step 2. If they do, do the paperwork with the ATF to pay the tax to make the rifle a SBR.

Step 3. Wait until the paperwork is approved. Once it is, then you can do the convserion. I'm not sure if an original UZI SMG barrel will work in the sem-auto guns or not. If not, you could always cut down the 16" barrel.

Sorry I don't know anything about Florida law though.

The semi guns have a barrel restrictor ring over the feed ramp that the barrel inserts into. This prevents an original FA barrel from being swapped in. You would either need to shorten the barrel that came with the gun, get a spare barrel and shorten it, or have the outside diameter of the breech end of an original short barrel turned down to fit inside the ring.

Flfiremedic,
I was also looking into this for my imi model b. If you locate a source for an extra carbine barrel please post it up. It would be easier to just have one cut down rather than modifing your semi to accept the smg barrel as mentioned in the above post.
Btw what part of Florida are you located in?

The EASIEST way to do it is to not touch the trunnion or restrictor ring and buy an SMG barrel that has been turned to fit a semi-auto trunnion and restrictor ring. Simple reason: It's easier to take metal off an SMG barrel than from the inside of a reciever.

SBR's are legal. You can do it two ways.

1. File a Form 1, engrave it when the stamp comes back and install a new barrel.
2. Have a manifacturer rebuild it and then Form 4 it to you.

No need to chop a 16" barrel down; you can get semi-pattern proper 10" barrels from a variety of vendors.
