So a while back I posted a thread about a certain 686 4" no dash that I wanted (Guillermo remembers haha). I didn't buy it, kind of bummed bummed me out. I did buy a 2.5" 66 no dash though which I'm still smiling about.

Looking at my 6" 686-6 next to the 66 made me want the earlier 686 even more but the store owner wouldn't even entertain a trade.

Sad face.

Fast forward to today, a gun show is in town and I went to it only hours before it closed, toting my 6" 686-6. Didn't know why I had it, just brought it. I especially didn't expect a miracle.

Within 15min of being there I found a 6" 686-3 on a table (I NEVER SEE THESE). Very nice man and what was probably family behind it. We talked for a bit and after checking it out from top to bottom, I asked him about trading. I thought it was the biggest stab in the dark ever but why not.

He traded the revolvers. I was containing my excitement so hard I almost peed. Very respectful older gentleman, I kind of wish we had more time I'd love to buy him a beer and have him share some knowledge, I think he knew he was doing me a favor but then again I am so personable lol. If he is on this forum then I want to thank him, it meant a lot.

It's exactly what I wanted to accomplish with that gun of mine and I was able to do it. Now to order a Wolff spring kit :).

Just thought I'd share and btw if you need a lucky person to take to a gun show, bring me haha.

Oh crap, now I have to order 120$ worth of Ahrends grips for them.....

EDIT oh oh and I just started reloading, I have saved 1400 .357 cases so here we go!

I traded a new crappier s&w for an older better s&w on a whim, not intending to bring my pistol but I did. I had missed an opportunity a few months earlier and by chance had it again. Lucky day. Get it?

Your perogative. I just don't think I'd trade a known-good firearm for an identical one of unknown mechanical condition just because it has forged instead of MIM internals (MIM hasn't really been a problem anyway).

I would also be curious why the other fellow was willing. If he knew of the difference, he'd have probably declined. If he didn't know, it still begs the question of what his perceived benefit was (Unless he wanted the lock)

I don't share any of your concerns.

He was there with the gun to sell it Perhaps he thought a new gun would sell better than an old one. He was there to sell guns. Who cares really, I got the gun I wanted.

I have fired 24 primer only cases from this since I got home and have had no ftf. I ran through all of the things to check for in a s&w and it was great. I brought a flashlight to check it out. I'm no fool.

I even took the grips off at the table.

Sorry you dont appreciate this but I certainly do so that's enough for me.

Congratulations on your trade. I also like the looks of the older models although I feel the new ones perform just fine. Enjoy shooting it. You need to post pics of your new revolver.

My thoughts exactly!! Thanks. I never doubted the new one but felt I was missing something.

congratulations on a trade that you are happy with!!!

one complaint....

No PICS!!!!!!!

!! I will post some tomorrow, and thanks, you always understood my strange obsession haha.

IDK? It seems strange to me that the guy was trying to sell a 6in 686 and he trades it for a 6in 686.

Was he smiling when you walked away?

^That's kind of what I was thinking.

I had no indication whatsoever that anything shady was going on. I talked to him for quite a bit and like I said I think he almost knew he was doing me a favor but did it anyway b/c I was being friendly/respectful to him and his family. He was elderly and maybe thought it was neat that a younger guy has taken interest in older Smiths. I got the vibe that he grew up in a different era where you didn't have to worry much about people being dishonest.

I could tell he was probably a vet by the way he was talking about the M1a he had on the table. (said he was only selling it b/c he had gotten a National Match). I was tempted to buy that M1a too haha.

Congrats! :) It is always a good day when you get to trade an inferior gun for a superior one!

Enjoy that lock free, MIM free 686 with the classic frame lines that only pre lock S&W's have!!

Just curious -

When & how did you discover you had an "inferior" newer gun? Did you actually have a problem with it? Or were you content until you read some interbuz about how crappy it was. Don't sell the very respectful older gentleman short - he may know a lot more about revolvers than you think.

At any rate, congrats on your dream gun, but now that you've got it, I hope you plan to spend your time actually shooting it. "Newer guns blow" threads are popular, to be sure, but they don't seem to leave much time to actually practice. Kind of ironic, don't you think? ;)

I shoot at least once a week.

New revolvers do not blow. Taurus offers value, Ruger offers a tough, albeit crude product. New S&W revolvers are mediocre quality at a high price with a device that locks up the gun.

Congrats on the upgrade!! I also got rid of a 4" 686-6, and then later picked up a 4" 686-1. It was not in the same deal as yours was. I always prefer a no lock to a lock S&W if possible. Although I would also be slightly concerned of why he wanted to make the trade as well. Hopefully he is not as informed as you, good luck with a sweet wheelie!!

Dang, the guy is happy about a trade he didn't expect to make, shares the story here and all the Negative Nellies come out!

OP, congrats on trading for what you wanted!

Not ironic at all if you have read some of my other posts I shoot 600-1000 rounds per month of .357 (few .38). I also spend a lot of time dry firing my revolvers with snap-caps. Thanks though.

Haha, I expected some of the negative replies. As a follow up, the gun shoots amazingly well and I am 100% satisfied.

I will post some pics when i get some new grips.

Hey Shien,

A quality .22 is a great training tool.

Lot's of cheap practice.

I like newer ones better because they come with 7-shot cylinders.

I've found the 6-shot versions almost always have a vastly superior action. The rest of the the time they're merely superior.

I have been looking at these, don't tempt me haha.

Thank you for your insight wise sage ;)
