I'm carrying my XDm 3.8 Compact in a Galco Avenger Outside the Waistband holster at 4 o'clock with an untucked cover shirt. This option will get me through the winter. Speaking of which, I'm thinking OWB will be better in the winter than Inside/Tucked. I'm thinking it will be easier/faster to get to than pulling back/up a jacket AND cover shirt. If I had the Crossbreed I would most likely tuck the cover shirt which would add one more layer of difficulty in the winter. If it's cold enough to wear the jacket then I won't use the cover shirt, just keep the jacket on. Why? Wearing an untucked shirt with a jacket looks pretty goofy.

I didn't like the Galco at first when I was trying to wear it at 3 o'clock and stradling the side belt loop on my jeans. I moved it just behind that loop and it works much better. Very comfortable while driving. I did have to move my wallet to the left rear pocket so as not to flash when pulling out my wallet or checkbook.

Standby, suggestions for carrying in the jacket pocket are right behind my post.

I quit carrying a wallet years ago. My sciatic nerve is still thanking me!

Galco is probably one of the most cost effective to buy for good gunleather.

It will collapse when you draw making it difficult to reholster. Sweat will soak right through nylon onto your pistol. Nylon typically doesn't provide much retention with the holster itself, you'd need some kind of retention device. They are not needed with a well made leather or kydex holster.

Leather (most of them) or kydex holsters will stay open when you draw making reholstering, especially one handed, easier. Kydex and leather (especially horsehide) will keep the sweat off your pistol.

You have a $500 pistol. No sense in getting a $20 nylon holster.

There are lots of good options available. The Garrett Industries recommendation above is an excellent option.

High Noon has some good leather options. The most important thing to do when you get to the High Noon site, after you look at the holster options, is to spend some time on the Questions section. They will answer a bunch of questions you may have about features or design. Whether or not you buy from them, you'll leave the site having learned a bunch about holsters.

One of the guys on this forum, I can't remember who, buys those thin High Noon models every time he buys a new gun. They are pretty inexpensive and ship quickly.

If I remember correctly, he basically uses it to see if he is going to like carrying the new pistol IWB. If he doesn't like carrying the pistol IWB, he then isn't out a bunch of money and still has a holster he can use "in a pinch". If he does like carrying the new pistol IWB, he then order's a better holster, but still uses the High Noon "softy" until the new holster comes in. They all come with a single clip which is handy as a quick on holster for a short trip when you don't want to put on a holster with a more involved attachment system.

I think he has a pretty good plan.

I also think they are a pretty good idea for a person new to carrying to see if they like IWB carry and what position and cant they'd like without spending too much money.

That's one of the reasons I like the Raven Concealment Phantom. With one holster and some different attachments you can wear the same holster IWB or OWB. You can also vary the ride height and cant. Though I haven't tried it, I suppose you could even run the holster cross draw. While the Raven really is geared towards the "tactical expert", I think it really is a good holster for the new guy so he can figure out what type of carry he likes. I know it helped me.

Don't forget a good belt. That may be more important than the holster.
