What is the quickest big game hunt you ever did? I mean from the time you leave your truck or tent, begin your hunt, and bag the animal?

Anyone top thirty minutes?

In less than one minute, I walked out back and a crow flew overhead and I bagged it with my 12 gauge.

Does that count?

Arrived on stand opening day at around 6:55.

Was standing over a dead doe at 7:20.

Anyone top thirty minutes?

Several Times with Wild Turkeys, many time deer hunting. Some of the small parcels we drive later in the gun deer season take only a few minutes to set up and drive. Many times you just get to your stand and the drivers step into the woods and out they come. But these aren't generally my most memorable hunts. Gettin' my bird or buck right away opening day can be a relief, but it's the hunts that last all season that teach me somethin'.

Actually, around 1981, I went to the top of the field as a relative was in the woods and I was just getting comfortable (at ten below zero) and popped a buck as it came limping out of the woods about 20 feet away from me! I had to finish him off with a 357 Magnum to the back of the head as he was really in pain.

Upon skinning him, I found that someone most likely the night before opening day, shot him in the ribs and broke two ribs with a huge blood bruse about 8" in diameter. He also had a hernia with gangrene setting in. Too bad, as there was a lot of wasted meat on that critter. The only positive thing is I put him out of his misery.

I would say, within about 15 minutes of getting comfortable, he showed up, frankly, I was suddenly suprised to turn to the right and see a buck!

I have not shot a deer since then, even though I hunt every year!

How about could have? I walked into my stand last year which is no more than 30 yards from my basement door. By the time I got up to my seat and turned around there was a good size spike looking up at me at the bottom of the ladder. He stayed for the next 45 minutes eating acorns under the tree I was sitting in. He was either too dumb or accustomed to people. I let him walk.

I missed him 2 weeks ago for opening day of muzzleloader.

Parked my truck once on the side of a logging road to put on chains so I could get to area I wanted to hunt.

When I opened the door of the truck I noticed a herd of elk lying in a meadow just up the hill. I grabbed my rifle slithered about 50 yards and popped one.

So like 1 minute from the truck.

First year that I elk hunted I was on a nine day pack in deal about 20 miles by horse. Ate breakfast the first morning, walked out of camp a few hundred yards and shot a rag horn bull. It was really nice because I had the rest of the week to climb around the mountain tops and enjoy the country. Others in my group hunted hard all week and never got a shot. I'd rather have luck than skill any day.

A few years ago I was on my way to my stand when I saw the shape of a very large doe between me and my stand. Stood there behind some brush for a minute, checked my watch for legal shooting time and stepped out a little to get a clear shooting lane.

My Uncle Bob heard the shot and thought I'd had a ND.

I can beat 30 minutes by about 29 1/2 minutes :D Opened the cabin door to head out to the truck, was a nice 8 point standing at the tree line looking at me :what: Needless to say, he looked too long  Chambered a round, aimed, dropped him in his tracks. Hung him on the pole, headed out to the truck to fill the 2 doe tags I had left :D

I was stopping by a friends house a few years ago and had about 40 minutes of shooting light left so I decided to check the fields behind his house(that I have permission to hunt). I walked a few hundred yards and there was a decent 8 point buck standing in the field. I crept a little closer and took the shot. All in all it was 5-10 minutes.

I got bored with some vistor's chit-chat, so I drove around to the back pasture and parked. A few minutes later a doe wandered out of the woods. Bang, whop, plop. Field dress, drive over to her, stuff her in the trunk, and back to the house. Maybe thirty minutes total time.

2 minutes maybe

My dad and drove to a place we used to hunt whitetail one mid-season morning. This guy was pre-rutting some does right in the horse corral we parked next to. It was probably minutes on either side of legal shooting light, but when he turned his head revealing his beams and points, I shot him. My dad was still putting his gear on next to the Bronco when I fired.

Dad bagged the smaller 4x4 (8 pt. for you Easterners) in the picture while I was dressing this guy out. Whole hunt was probably less that an hour and a half.

I parked the truck about 100 yds from the stand I was using and 200 yds from the stand my buddy was using kind of between them. Walked to the stand climbed up sat down took maybe 5 minutes. A pack of hogs must have followed me in shot two of the four before my buddy even got to his stand. He called on the radio and I told him to sit tight while I walked to the third stand location. Climbed up sat down took a sip of water looked up as an eight point waltzed in about 30 yards in front of me. He put his head down to feed and bang number three critter in about 30 minutes from the time I shut the truck off and one more irritated call on the radio from my bud who never really got to hunt that day. Sure do miss that place it is now owned by the state water management folks no hunting allowed.
Sorry for the ramble.
That's three in 30 minutes not a record but not bad either.

i was eating breakfast, drinking coffee, when i noticed deer walking though the back yard... Ran and got my gun, and shot a deer using the corner of the house as a rest, still in my pajamas.

Have also shot hogs in my PJ's (at least i slipped on a pair of crocs over barefeet), from the same general area.

I've had two deer hunts shorter than 30 minutes, that doesn't count the deer I've happened upon and taken while I wasn't actually hunting. 1) First year I deer hunted I had already bagged two deer that season, met a buddy and went out to a farm he had permission to hunt. We parked the truck and walked about 100 yards to the edge of a field we were going to hunt the back side of. There were 4 does standing in the field, we shot at the same time and he had a malfunction, I got mine though. Gutted it and left we were there 10-15 minutes. 2) Got in the stand opening morning about 5 years ago. I was running late and it was barely day light. I set off a Buck Bomb about 100 yards out from my stand in a bean field. 5 minutes later a really nice 6 comes out and I decide to pass him up. 30 seconds later a really nice 10 comes out and I shoot. Unfortunately he ran into a drainage canal and I was never able to find him. (I found lots of blood and a 2 inch chunk of rib, even brought the dog out) I spent the rest of the day looking, made me sick. That was the last time I shot a Core-Lokt, been shooting Winchester Silver Tips since then and have not lost a deer with them yet.

I have taken several deer right at the start of legal hunting hours, but I'd been on stand since oh-dark-thirty, so I guess that doesn't count.

West Texas 1991, second weekend in November. Got in blind at 0630, set up rifle, had just put in a big pinch of Copenhagen Snuff while watching the sun rise. See 8 point rack rise up in the big orange ball, about 120 steps away. .308 150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip, bang flop at 0707. Dad heard shot, drove down to meet me, saw whitetail buck on ground and said, "that didn't take long", then smiled. Ahh Memories :).

Just my .02,

When I was 13 (second year hunting) we were driving down a two track road opening day, saw a nice 17 inch antelope at 30 yds. Got out and waited until my dad's friend said it was shooting hours and dropped him. I guess that would be one second, right? We had him in the truck less than 20 minutes after shooting light. He scored 82 6/8, 2/8 shy of Wyoming record book (I want to get him remeasured).

The next year we pulled into the game check at 9:23 AM opening day with 6 antelope and a mule deer (four hunters).

Last spring I parked my car at the ranch and started walking up the valley. Immediately saw a 175 lb boar across the valley and dropped him with my 270. 10 minutes tops from ignition off to dead pig.

Almost beat that opening weekend for deer this August as I spotted a nice buck and two does in the area I park as I was still on the highway turning onto the ranch. Parked on the road and went after him in shorts, t-shirt, and flip-flops. He spooked just as I was lining up the shot, would have been 5 mins. Kind of a good thing as an hour later I got a much nicer buck.

2 winters ago we had a lot of snow and I got tired of the wife telling me to shoot a few of the deer that were always in the house yard, with the land owner permits we had. So when I saw the deer crowding out the cattle at a round bale feeder 100 feet from the house I called around and found a brother and cousin that had not got a deer that year. So I stepped out of the house followed a snow bank to about 20 feet away and shot 2 does with a .357. Neither went more then 50 feet. Including the phone calls it was less then 10 minutes. Oh and the rest of the deer were back later that day. I left them alone as we had enough already.
