Aug or M16?

I'm not there yet. I'm still in the "MAC bracket" with the majority. However, I plan on being in a position, within the next 12 months, where both of these are affordable weapons/toys. Which one should I get? And why?

Also, I had considered an AC556. I know this is in an entirely different catagory, but should it be? I mean - does the price difference of my other two choices, compared to the Ruger, actually represent a considerable difference in quality and/or effectiveness?

Where would they all fall in terms of available services, accessories, replacement parts, or upgrades? Am I correct in assuming more would be available for the M16, followed by the AC556, and lastly the AUG?

I'm still as much as 12 months away from having to decide, but it gives me something to think about while I'm waiting for my current form4 to be processed :)

Diffidently go with a m16 with a2 type lower. Tons of parts around. Plus by simply changing uppers you can shoot so many diff calibers and barrel lengths. A stock m16 might not be as cool a an AUG but slap on a modern upper and things change. Oh and don't buy the Ruger. Mini 14's are cool but not for the kind of money a FA will cost.
 
The M-16 is going to give you by FAR the most options. If you're going to USE the gun for anything "practical" like competition or such, those options are really going to make a difference. You'll be able to replace any part on that gun (except the receiver itself) easily for pretty much ever.

The AUG is interesting, if the design appeals to you.

The Ruger is appealing in that you've got a factory-built full-auto rifle that you can send back to the maker for any service you might need. Not quite so many really GOOD options as the M-16, but a solid rifle.
 
I'll point out that AUG parts have always been available through Pete Athens, even during the darkest days of the ban. They're not cheap, but they're there.

Versatility definitely goes to the M16...
 
I have to agree with what appears to be the prevailing opinion...the M16 would be my first choice. It is by far the easiest (and cheapest, after the intitial cost) of the three to maintain, upgrade and repair. The AC556 would be my choice if cost was the primary issue and I wanted to maintain a 5.56 weapon. The AUG is, as Sam pointed out, "interesting" but doesn't offer much in the way of flexibility. If you like the bullpups, and I do, it is a great gun. But it still doesn't allow for many modifications.

I have SA versions of all three and I like to shoot them all. Any AR platform is going to be my choice if I can only have one.

Yea, I was really leaning towards the M16, but my wife has been trying to push me towards the AUG (I have a seriously cool wife). The idea of quick caliber swaps really appeals to me. There are 22lr options for a RR M16 right?

Yes, there are several .22LR options for the M16, but I don't know of any for the AUG. That makes shooting regularly much less expensive. There are also options for belt-feeding your M16 if the spirit moves you...and if cost is less of a concern.

My wife is also very "cool" when it comes to my firearms purchases, but getting parts for her Delorean is far more difficult (and expensive) than getting parts for my VW Thing. So the Thing gets more use.
 
You may be able to install one of the modern AUG stocks that take stanag mags on the receiver? I agree with the modularity aspect of the M16 but really find the AUG to be more versatile if one chooses to stick with the 5.56 as the weapon is awesome for CQB, while maintaining barrel lenght of sufficient length for longer engagement. Not to mention the quick barrel change capability allows you to quickly go from 16" to 20". Also, the AUG balances far better with a can although the face blowback sucks. As you can probably tell I really dig the AUG but do agree that the caliber versatility of the M16 is one hell of a selling point.
 
Having shot several types of bullpup rifles (RFB, FS2000, Tar21), I can say that the triggers are universally horrid. The M16 also has the advantage of easily obtainable replacement parts, cheap and readily available magazines, multiple caliber options and easily mounted aftermarket optics (with flat top uppers). Without a doubt, that is what I'd go for.

Given the intended purpose of those rifles, not precision, and ecspecially for a select fire version is a poor trigger really that big of a deal? Also, there are aftermarket products that drastically improve the AUG trigger.
