What is in a well-rounded NFA collection?

With 41P becoming law, there's essentially a 6 month period where we can still apply for tax stamps under the old rules. I predict a lot of folks will take advantage of this. Personally, I don't mind the extra fingerprints and photographs, except for the hassle of it. But I may go ahead and get some stamps pending anyway to avoid having to do it.

That brings me to my question: what all do you think should be in a well-rounded NFA collection?

So far I have two AR15 SBRs, a 9mm suppressor, a .45 suppressor (both can be used for .22 as well), and a pump 12 gauge SBS. What else do I need?

I've thought about getting a stamp in process for a home build .30 caliber rifle suppressor, but otherwise I'm not sure. I know I don't have the scratch for a machine gun. What about a bolt gun SBR? 40mm launcher? What do you all think?

Maybe a good dedicated .22 can like a Sparrow or Spectre? On a bolt gun with subsonic ammo they are almost movie quiet. You might also consider a high power 308 can like a Harvester.

I just filed a Form 1 for a 10" 30 cal can in November and will probably build it using a SD Tactical tube. Of course I have a stamp for a 45 caliber can I received back in the spring that I haven't even started building yet, so that may take awhile. I filed a second AR yesterday just in case I break the first one.

I disagree with the poster above regarding buying a machine gun. Since you already have the ARs then either a bumpfire stock or that fancy ATF blessed drop-in trigger unit (I forget the maker) gets you a pretty close facsimile at 1/10 the cost. Spend the money on stamps, not artificially inflated goods.

I'm going to be SBRing an extra lower soon and maybe getting a 5.56 rifle can for it. Not sure how much activity I'll be wanting to do once the new rules go into effect so I'm trying to push forward a few of my planned purchases. Unfortunately I can't swing a machine gun. Really wish I'd been able to pick up that MAC a few years ago, but the lady selling it was certifiably insane.

A .30 caliber can would definitely be on my list (well, I've already got one, but still :D). Personal preference would be for something that is FA rated for peace of mind, unless it's going to be dedicated to a bolt gun.

Maybe a SBR/FA rated 5.56 can for your AR SBRs?

Or an AK SBR, and maybe a SBR bolt gun in .300 Blk or something (or handi rifle SBR).

Maybe a 9mm micro suppressor? Not a high use toy but they're fun, especially on something like a Makarov.

Personally I think no NFA collection is complete without an Obrez. :D

HOWEVER, not everyone shares my enthusiasm on that one. Have you thought about a Super Shorty or nice double barrel 10"?

Designing your own AOW would be cool too, like a pen gun, table gun, briefcase gun. :)

Also, I noticed you didn't mention an AK SBR.

When in doubt, just go with SilencerCo's Wizard Staff! lol.

Lots of good suggestions!

It does definitely depend on interests and pocketbook. I can afford to spend a little, but I am budget conscious. That's why a machine gun is out. The MACs are running around $5k to $7k right now, it seems. I'd want to start adding things like a LAGE upper on top of that, I'm sure. I definitely don't have that sort of money to invest, and if I ever do, I'll suck it up and file all the fingerprints and photographs.

I shoot .22 through both of my current cans. They're both Thompson Machine cans, and can be taken down for cleaning. I have a 22/45 that I use for a host, and mostly I dispatch varmints with it. Mostly, though, I shoot .300 Blackout through the 9mm, and .458 SOCOM through the .45 can. My AR SBRs are in those calibers.

My SBS is a 12 gauge pump-action NEF Pardner Pump, a Remington 870 clone. It has Magpul furniture and a 12 inch barrel. Like my ARs, it was an inexpensive build.

I'm pretty much certain that a Form 1 .30 caliber can is on my list. I'll probably do a "solvent trap" and freeze plug build. That should cover my suppressor needs.

Not sure I want a double-barrel SBS. I don't use my current SBS much. My interests tend towards deer hunting. That's why I'm leaning towards something like a bolt-action SBR. I like the Obrez idea, but if I cut down a Mosin, I'll keep the stock and thread it so I could put the can on it. Problem is that Mosins aren't as cheap as they used to be. So I'm on the fence about whether to just go ahead and invest a little more in a new manufacture bolt action to cut down. There's a fair number of $300-400 rifles on the market now that could work.

This would mostly be a fun project, but something that I could use at short range in the woods for deer. I've always like the look of something like this:

I definitely like the idea of a "build." I don't want to just buy something that's completely done.

Everyone should have an AOW on a form 4. You need the little red $5 stamp to stand out amongst all the $200 stamps.

MACs can be found for under $5K if you keep your eyes open. I just bought one a few months ago for $4500 with a silencer. There are other moderately priced MGs as well, once in a while you'll see a Reising for under $5K.

Destructive Device is a must. I plan on getting my papers in order for a semi-auto KPV (14.5x114mm) in the coming months as I knock out my recently approved* SBR --I understand the Bureau frowns on DDs as the first tax stamp, but perhaps they'll like me better now

Still more practical than an outright cannon, btw (or Obrez ;))

Why NFA? Weld up some demilled Mosin chunks and build a mere pistol-pistol (which can be CC'ed as legally as any handgun)

*except for the stupid DRAFT watermark...

In my dream of lottery winning I would want the following:

Select fire: M-16A1, Colt 9mm sub gun w/ suppressor, Lightweight midlength M-16, AK-74, and AK-103

For a belt fed I would like an M-60E4 or a rare M240 SAW size.

Go broke trying to feed them for sure...

"As much as you can afford," is the proper answer.

If you're "collecting" with NFA stuff, you want to go for the unique end of the spectrum. Silencers are old hat and common, but things like Cane Guns and AOWs are neat. You can go nuts with destructive devices. If you've got the cash, Machine Guns are it.

A well-rounded NFA collection, for someone who collects U.S. military weapons, would include:

1. Thompson submachine gun
2. BAR
3. M3 Greasegun
4. Air-cooled Browning .30 cal.
5. Water-cooled Browning .30 cal.
6. .50 cal. M2HB
7. M60
8. Full-auto M16

Well, NO FA collection is complete with out a belt fed of some variety!
Also NO FA collection is complete if it only contains gunz from a single country!
Here is my answer to both of these. :D

'Well I forgot that this stupid A- site will not allow a photo posted in another thread to be reposted in a different one a year or 2 later (even changing the name didn´t work) - Really Stupid!!!

So if you want to see my 3 toyz you have to go to "My C&R MP44 is finally all mine" in the Full auto section.

I'm in the same boat. Just got my first NFA item and don't want it to be my last because of this stupid 41p stuff. I guess I have a few months to save up for one, still really want a scorpion SBR, and since i don't have another good suppressor host maybe I can make it that. Or, I've always wanted a honey badger style AR also and my current SBR would be difficult to convert back and forth between it's current configuration and that of the honey badger. Not really sure I'll be able to pull that off so soon so I may have to restructure my trust a little to keep everyone off the responsible persons list. At least the AR receiver can be bought and applied for for a lot less money than the full scorpion. Of course we will all have to be patient as wait times inevitably shoot up. I am glad I heard about 41p last year which prompted me to go ahead and plop the cash down to set up the trust.
