I agree. The 308 will take any Deer you can get in your sights. (as will the 30-06 I use)

Given the higher pressures it can be loaded for, the .308 really does not give up much to the .30-06. I started hunting a little with a .308 two years ago, and I see zero difference in kill ratios / run-offs compared to my .270 and 7RM. All four deer were DRT.

The .308 is plenty for deer. Far less powerful than the .308, for the Texas whitetail I hunt, I have used various .30-30's for the last few years more than anything else, and so far no run-offs. Only 1 hog needed a follow-up.

308 is a great caliber for deer and also with lighter bullets, all kinds of critters. Fun to shoot, much less recoil than the 06 and very accurate. If you're looking for a minimum for deer though, you can go a lot smaller/faster than that. I think eveyone needs a 308 in the safe.

The .308 IME is just about perfect for whitetails.

I shoot a Remington 700PSS .308 with a 26 inch barrel. I get velocities equal to the .30-06 (2900 fps) with 150 grain bullets and below maximum handloads, with one hole three shot groups at 100 yards.

Flat land restrictions maybe? Would be a bummer not being able to use any caliber rifle.

I think Indiana is a shotgun only state like IL. at least that is my guess, don't go into Indiana very often.

The 308 or 7-08 are about perfect deer hunting rounds.

not only perfect for whitetail but plenty adequate for any walking animal on this continent except the non-black bear species. there are some that may argue that statement but it's God's honest truth, as they say..
Just for kicks and giggles, call up Alaska's Wildlife Game Commission and ask any competent wildlife officer for confirmation.

I agree on the fun to shoot and accurate part, but I've not noticed a substantial difference in recoil between it and the .30-06. Of course, the old military Mauser with the steel buttplate may have something to do with that.

Oh yeah, and it's absolutely ideal for whitetails at sensible ranges.

Definitely too miniscule.

Great long range round for deer and most any other big game animal in North America, no matter what caliber arguments you hear.

Next to the 7mm.08 the .308 is great for white-tail. My own personal opinion is that the 7mm.08 is what the .308 wants to be when it grows up

Indiana is a shotgun and handgun cartridge long gun only state. I think the DNR here in Illinois is about to change to the handgun cartridge long guns soon as well. There have been some meetings about it.

308 is my all time favorite whitetail caliber!

One of the greastest things about the 308 is the overall different types of ammo as well as it's availibility,which you simply will not find with the slightly faster(moot point) 7mm-08.
And the other issue that I personally like about the 308 is it can be had in a true short action and does exceptionally well out of carbine length barrels from 18.5 inches to 20 inches in length.
Some call the 308 a 30-06 lite.
I personally love it and have long ago put away my 270 and 30-06 for this particular caliber.

I am accustomed to hunting large game with magnums, as in .257 Wea Mag, .300 Win Mag and .300 Wea Mag. I didn't know what to expect from my Winchester M70 Stealth chambered in .308 Win. I think you got that turned around.........

I once sold a .308 to a local guy, I had loaded up tack-driving loads with 100 grain or 110 grain HP's, just because out of about 20 different load combinations these pulled almost one-shot holes off the 100 yard bench!

The first year he had it, he shot a buck in the side (broad-side, lung shot). He said the thing flew up, swung down and was deader than a doornail just like that (probably less than 50 yards).

He said when he gutted it, the lungs looked like someone threw a hand grenade in there! He was really impressed, and I was also impressed when he told me how they turned out for hunting!

If I had to be limited to just one round for everything here in the US Varmit to big game i would take the .308. it's wheel house is deer, but can be used for larger game easily as long as the hunter knows their bullet/trajectory and can shoot their rifle with a moderation of skill
