I wouldn't call it all that loud, but, yeah, the ejection of the Garand clip makes a ping sound.

I went through Basic with the Garand, and you don't really hear the ping when on a firing line with a bunch of other shooting. You easily hear your own, of course.

The ping is one of the best things about it. It always brings a smile to my face.

Start looking at odcmp.org. The CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) is a government program to promote civilian shooting. They host competitions and most importantly to you, they sell M1 Garands to qualified people. By qualified I mean veterans and people who are a member of shooting organizations. There is a list of the qualifying organizations on the website. The M1 Garands start around $500. I've never ordered any from them but I hear it can take several months to get.

I haven't personally bought a Garand from the CMP (I would if I had the money), but all I've heard is good things. Also check them out for .30-06 ammo to go with that Garand!

The CMP is a great organization. Get an M1 from them with confidence.

Mine took 3 weeks from the day I dropped the paperwork in the mailbox. CMP Service Grade is the best deal at $625. The metal on mine was practically new.

Here is the main question: does the CMP again have a fairly good selection of Service Grades?

They recently were far behind in their checking etc. My objective is to buy a second Service Grade late this spring or summer, and might drive to the Anniston store. It must be strange to have five Enfields but only one M-1?

The northern store is at Camp Perry outside of Port Clinton Ohio. When I was in the Guard last year, my First Sergeant picked up a service grade for about six hundred if I remember right. As far as I know you need to be in the Guard, Reserves, Active duty or belong to an affiliated club, which there is a list of on http://www.odcmp.com/ You can belong to certain veteran groups too.

The CMP is definitely the way to go when purchasing an M1 unless you're after the rare and unusual. You have to do a little paperwork up front, but it's a simple matter and you will get a rifle that you know hasn't been chopped up and welded back together. CMP has excellent customer service and will work hard to make sure you are a satisfied customer. They also have other rifles for sell on occasions, such as .22 caliber training rifles, WW1 and WW2 bolt-action rifles, carbines, etc. I've purchased numerous items from them and they've never let me down.

Another vote for the CMP route if you want a Garand. They currently do have Service Grades in stock.

About 80% of my safe is CMP rifles. It is addictive.

To the best of my recollection - A DD214 works, if you are a vet. If you have taken hunter safety (with live fire) that works too. If you can get a rangemaster to sign off, that works, as does a LEO.

The CMP is the way to go for a Garand.
My Springfield Special came via Fedex in about a month from the time I sent the order and is worth every penny to me. It's beautiful and shoots great! Be sure to stock up on CMP ammo.

Last summer I stopped in the Camp Perry store and found a couple of service grades that I lusted after. I left empty-handed and still regret it almost every day. That won't happen this summer!

Yes, the rifle will ship to your house once you jump through their verification hoops.

Yup it comes right to your door (no FFL required). If you want to get a Garand and are on a budget, the CMP is definitely the way to do so (heck even if you're not on a budget, it's what I'd still recommend). My M1 was my first personally owned rifle and I have never regretted going the CMP route. If you're ordering through the mail, I would recommend getting a Service Grade.
