Buying ammo/reloading parts online

Are there any restrictions on buying ammo or reloading parts (specifically thinking powder) online?

Just a hazmat fee and shipping and handling charges. The fees from Powder Valley are $25, so the order needs to be worth it. That is for primers as well.

It's just a designation for stuff that isn't particularly hazardous in the form in which it is being shipped, such as hairspray, lighters, ammo, and so on. You'll often see boxes marked with ORM-D around offices. Usually those had things like paper shredder oil or whiteboard cleaner, but that doesn't stop me from hoping it's a big box of ammo being delivered.

For what it is worth, most places that sell items that require the HAZMAT surcharge are upfront about it on their main page or the product page, so it is rarely a surprise. Since the HAZMAT fee is fixed up to certain amount, many people either order lots at once or go in with local friends to distribute the cost over more items. Hope that helps.

Also does not ocur for pre-primed brass.

Which is why I buy from my local gun shop! His price, although higher, is still less than shipping and hazmat fee added to the cost of product. Plus I don't have to wait for it to be delivered.

That's why I put together an order for a years worth or so. Savings online are $5-8 per 1# container of powder or 1K primers. Bullets are far less expensive online as well.

I love my LGS, and while their price on guns is competitive with Buds (once you include a FFL fee), their prices on reloading components are just too high.

Start buying in 8# jugs and primers by the 5,000 sleeve and then the savings really make sense (and cents!)

I can afford the extra $5 bucks at a LGS for my occasional purchases but really can't afford to increase my order online to cover the "Hazmat" fee as well as the shipping cost!

If I remember correctly, you cannot ship powder and primers together, meaning if you order both, you pay 2 hazmat fees. Or has that changed. I haven't ordered online in a long time.

That is incorrect....They come together in one package and you are charged one fee.


I recently got a order that had 12k primers and 20 lbs of powder in it. The total shipping charges was $48.00....That sounds like a lot. It really wasn't in the end. I saved over $200 after the cost of shipping by buying online instead of buying locally.....Sure, the local dealer has to eat, but so do I. I save my money where I can.

I can't store, much less afford that kind of purchase!

You're in a different league than I am! I'm glad that you saved the money but remember those words when you roll up to your LGS and the sign on the door says "OUT OF BUSINESS" like happened to me this last week!

"That much" will fit in a medium box. Heck, a case of primers isn't much bigger than shoe box....As far as affording it, you pay now, pay later or quit shooting. Reloading components don't go bad and they certainly aren't going to get any cheaper......I have a friend that told me he bought a large quantity of powder in the 60's for 50 cents a pound...He is still using it.

Personally, I'm not worried about the LGS. If the business owner's choose to jack the prices up so high that shoppers look elsewhere it's not my fault if he closes. Sure, I don't mind a guy making a living, but won't support him in making a killing.

Primers come in sleeves of 5000 - it is always cheaper to get unbroken sleeves; powder comes in 1, 4, and 8# jugs - 8# containers are cheaper on a per pound basis than any other version - buying in those quantities - 5000 and 8# in multiples, saves the most on shipping and hazmat

as mentioned, they don't go bad given reasonable care in storage, so if you have your loads developed, it makes sense

The way it goes around here the cost of primers and propellant these days at the local gunstores is a little over double what PV sells theirs for including the Haz Mat. So with even 5k primers and 8 LBS propellant and I come out ahead enough to add some bullets in also for the same cost if I mail order. I even let one local small FFL add onto my Haz Mat order sometimes as his quantities are so small it makes sense to help him out when I can. I tell you one little Haz Mat box can cost a bunch for sure.
