Who Saw the Mentalist Kill "Red John"?

I just bought the first three seasons of The Mentalist, having never seen it before. It was an impulse buy, but I love the show and my mother and sister keep watching the videos over and over! We also are watching the 4th Season on CBS.

For those who don't know, Patrick Jane (the "mentalist") used to be a fake psychic. One night on a television show, he "dissed" a local serial killer who goes by the name of "Red John." Afterwards, Jane goes home to find his wife and daughter murdered, with Red John's characteristic "smiley face" in blood on the wall. So Jane joins the California Bureau of Investigation and helps solve crimes using his unique abilities. His primary goal, however, is to eventually catch Red John and mete out justice.

He gets that chance in the last show of the third season, and here's the rub: what's wrong with the scene?

I used to watch this show.
There was an episode in which Jane had a person prosecuted & convicted for being Red John he knew wasn't really RJ. That was the last episode I watched.
Hollowpoints are good rounds and I will recommend them for self defense but they don't make holes quite as big as advertised here.
Firing a semiauto while inside a jacket pocket is problematic; too much a chance of it not cycling right for more than one reason.
 
The idea that the slide had enough room to cycle and return to battery is implausible but not impossible. having enough room to eject the round is another issue entirely.
Lastly the first report would have sounded a little different due to the cloth of the pocket dispersing the gas from the expansion, and muffling it slightly. The other two reports would have sounded quite normal though.
I know I'm going to get some argument about that but that is what suppressors do they disperse the gas enough to deaden the report. I'm not saying it would have suppressed it completely but a little and then the second two shots would have had a normal report.
 
Don't forget it's HOLLYWIERD! A tv show where directors & prop people don't always know dittilly about guns. I know it would have been more realistic if he had used a snubby revolver. It's just entertainment, take it for what it is. BTW I watch the show too. LM
 
The main thing that was wrong with that scene is that the guy wasn't Red John. Other than that, the semi-auto very well could have fired inside a suit coat pocket, and Jane could have decocked it. Jane probably didn't actually fire the pistol for the scene, even with blanks. Sound was probably added later.

I guess we have a sequence for MythBusters.. those who assume the shot would be muffled? Well maybe a little muffled but not much on a coat like that. The 2nd and 3rd bullets probably would not exit the same hole, so it'd have to cut a new hole for each shot, so they'd all sound about the same. Why he pinched the grip with his fingers I don't know, he already had finger prints all over it as it was.

Don't need mythbusters. Just someone with a camera and an old coat.

I'm pretty sure that scene was supposed to be from the pocket. I can ignore some inaccuracies in this show, because Simon Baker is incredibly entertaining as Patrick Jane. I've been meaning to get the first three seasons, have only recently started watching.

The Mentalist establishes early on that Jane abhors violence, and is uncomfortable when handling firearms, so it's in character for him to handle the pistol with care/distaste after the deed was done.
 
The Mentalist

It is one of the enjoyable shows on tv today.The wife and I enjoy very much,that being said,don't pick it apart.It is movie magic,just like John Wayne never having to reload his SAA Colt 45 during a shootout.
