I did what many here recommend against and I traded a gun off for another one. In this case I swapped an AK47 for the 700...... and I'm glad as hell I did :D Don't get me wrong now I liked the AK and I understand that there are plenty of y'all out there that wouldn't dare do such a thing as to trade a firearm. To me this trade was to fill a role in the arsenal that I don't have and did't have the cash to buy. I could have saved up and gotten it later but I found a good deal and went for it. Also I had two brass burners AR & AK and was looking for something a little more precise at further distances.

Specs
Rem 700 tactical with 20" barrel
HS precision stock
Harris ultra light swivel bipod
Pride Fowler RR800
Badger Bolt Knob
Stock pac
All this came on the rifle with a round count of 91, only thing it needs now is a lil better trigger.

Took it to the range today and this is what I did @ 100yds 5 shots with Black Hills Match Ammo.

Did the same thing right after with a three shot group but dead center after moving a click left (if you look at it the right way rotate 90 to the right). Any body know what sort of powder BH uses? I'm gonna start loading for this thing hopefully soon.

nice shooting! think twice before selling that one. they aren't all like that.

Adjust that X-Mark trigger before you junk it...you might be pleasantly surprised.

I have three of those triggers in a drawer that were given to me by folks who didn't give them a chance...just sayin...they ain't half bad when properly adjusted.

Thanks fellas!

This is my first center fire bolt rifle that Ive actually sat at a bench with and did some shooting. The other groups where a little loose compared to these guys but hey I'm learnin. The nice thing was i was improving with every group.
Just tried to keep in mind breathing, hold and squeeze the trigger. I had a blast at it too! Ive had perma grin on my face all day.

I will give the trigger more time for sure, not in a hurry to go spending money when I think trigger time is really what i need.

nice rifle and nice shooting. i've been very pleased with my 700p as well. it'll shoot sub moa all day and touch half moa if i do my part.

i replaced the x-mark with a timney, but the x-mark wasn't that bad, just too heavy.

I like the x mark pro trigger myself. Then again, I also don't mind the floppy trigger on my lever action either.

Awesome shooter you have there! I'll have to get one of those SPS Tacticals. I used to own a 700P an 700VS , both in .308 with the 26" barrel. I'd like to try the 20" next time. I have a 20" in the 700LTR in .223.

I wasn't one of them. I made a very similar trade in Nov., getting rid of my Lancaster Tantal for a Remington 673 .350 Mag, and also couldn't be happier.

Anyway, Congratulations. It would seem that you got the better end of that deal.

That's a nice rifle and some good shooting on your part. Now get to a longer range and have some real fun. Those kind of rifles are wasted at 100 yards. Thy live to have their legs stretched out a bit.

I'm thinking the same thing, I did trade an Arsenal SGL 21, a good AK but dollar to dollar I think I did well.

C-grunt, thanks
I do plan on taking it out to my normal range, family land, where I have a safe downhill spot out to 250 yds. This is do to land orientation, neighboring houses, trees, etc. I do plan on cutting a shooting path threw some trees to stretch out to about 3-400 estimate. I went to the 100yd range to have the cover and a nice bench to sit at to get her dialed in. There is a range a little over an hour away from me that goes out to 500 but with no spotting scope they'd be having to go cold for me quite often so I could go check my target, lol. ( spotting scope on wish list)

You will be impressed when you stretch its legs. Mine is a dream @ 600. Is yours a 1 in 10 twist? Just curious what you are shooting(ammo). I have had really great luck with 178gr A-MAX and 43.6 gr of 4064. That stock looks awesome btw.

As somebody else suggested, adjust the trigger yourself. You should be able to get it safely down to 2-2.5#.

I was shooting 168gr Black Hills match, right out of the box. This seemed to do the best for me out of the three I tried; black hills, federal match & hornady match all 168. I did notice also that the black hills punch nice neat holes where the other two were a little bit sloppier. The projectile itself looks the same in all three, I'm suspecting Sierra matchking but not positive. Im wondering if the BH has a more concentric tension on the neck yielding a better flight path = better accuracy. Measuring will be needed to confirm theory.

I believe the twist on the 20" tacticals is 1:10, looked on he barrel, maybe I'm blind but I didn't see it.

I like the stock too, and I think midway has them right now for just under $300, not free but not the most expensive either.

When I do start loading I'm thinking of going heavier with a 175 gr. or so.... I've read that varget and RL 15 are also good powders for the .308.

2-2.5 pounds, eh? Will have to give it a go,

Gotcha, just wondering. I had seen a SPS a year or so ago that was a 1-11.25 or something. I might be mistaken. I was only asking in referance to the ammo you were shooting. If you get it out past 600yards try a box of the 178gr SMK's they did great for me out of the box.. I only noticed the difference when it was past 600 though. Varget will probably yield you bettr results, I just used the 4064 because I had alot of it, but it really did do good. Great looking rifle, and I am glad to hear that you are having good luck with it.
As others have said you should be able to get the trigger down, but be careful, the thread locker they use can round the allen wrench or the hex heads.. I replaced mine, but I had it down to just a tad over 2lbs. It broke great , but I had a refund credit I needed to use so I ordered a Timney. Now I wish I had went with the Geissele. A buddy of mine has one and it seems just a little crisper than mine. Might just be in my head.

I was shooting a 700 SPS in .308 just like this today at 540 and 600 yards. WOW! What a rifle. I am saving to get one for sure. They were cosmetically identical.

Nice shooting.

Just find a good tutorial before you do it. A lot of guys mess with the sear engagementuntil there is virtually none, and that's what causes M700s to fire when the bolt is closed.

Why does everyone hate on the X-mark trigger? Sure it is no Accutrigger, and sure is no Sako/Tikka trigger but I thought it was a big improvement over their previous models, and that was the ONLY thing I liked about my last 700.

If you go to quarterbore.com there is (or at least was) a really good tutorial on adjusting the trigger. As noted, keep enough sear engagement. Everything is covered in great detail.

I've got the trigger on my 700 7 mag (bench rest, not a hunter) down to a safe 1.8# and very smooth. Best I can get on my 22-250 is about 3# and it's kinda gritty. Once you look at the trigger assembly and the instructions, it becomes really clear how everything works.

You gotta start hand loading. You can save enough on 6-8 boxes of ammo to pay for a basic press.

redneck2,

I've got a 788 that had a horrid trigger, Timney finally made one for this rifle. Mine is factory set @ 32 oz's, made one hell of a difference in this piece, it always shot very good, now even better.

Heard mixed reviews on the Timney. Some great, some not so good. If I'm gonna pony up the money, I'll most probably get a Jewell.

There isn't an AK on the planet that I would not have traded for your M700. Would have had to think twice about a couple of ARs but... I think that you made a great trade! That is a fine rifle/scope setup.
