Rem 700 - modification question:

I have a Rem 700 PSS that I really like, and which has been very accurate right out of the box. That is, I like it fine except for one thing: loading it. I did get the two-piece scope mount initially, but I find it still somewhat cumbersome to load.

Is there a way to modify the rifle to accept magazines? I asked Remington this question and their answer was that it could not be done.

Does anyone know if there is an after-market option or modification that would allow the 'standard' Rem 700 PSS to use magazines?

HS Precision makes a modified floor plate/trigger guard that'll make a 700 accept a detachable magazine, but, I've read mixed reviews on it. A few say its great, but the vast majority says it compromises the reliability, sometimes when you rack the bolt to get a spent case out, it won't strip a new one out the magazine. Take into account also, that the magazines themselves are about $250/ea from HS. I vaguely remember at one time HS offering a conversion that'll make a 700 accept modified M14 magazines, but those also were kinda hit and miss in the reliability department.

Thanks for the information and the heads-up. You are right, it would be rather pricey if to the $200 floor plate conversion you have to add $250/mag.

I think the detachable magazine option requires modifying the receiver. When metal is removed from the receiver, it becomes less rigid and allows for more flexing. More flex may result in bigger group size so there's a tradeoff. Look at the single shot 700s and you'll see that they have a blind magazine well. That is, there's no milling away at the bottom of the receiver for a magazine in the stock. They're single shot and are more rigid.

Figure out what you want and you can either have your gun adopted (and you don't really recover any $ if you sell it) or you can develop your proficiency in loading through practice. Your call.

The H&S trigger guard was drop in fit on mine on an H&S stock, its higher quality than the factory trigger guard, but I've had no change in accuracy, and I've had no feeding problems.
On the down side you have to remove the magazines to load them, new 3 or 4 rnd magazine are $65 and 10rnd mags are $110 from H&S (this is off the price sheet on the catalog they just sent me) not cheap. Around the base of the magazine there is a little rubber seal that leaves a gap, and the seal broke on mine, it had a little rattle with no shells in the mag, but H&S sent me 5 new seals.
Overall its meet my expectations and I would buy another one, but i have found removable magazines on a bolt rifle uneccesary

yes this DOES exist and does exist fo scoped rifles.

supposedly allows use of 5 round charger clips (what's the capacity of the PSS 4+1??). you'll see them on some of the "custom tactical/sniper rifle" builders' web pages as options. thought the rifle builder i intend to go through when or if i get a long range custom gun built someply uses the H-S mag system.
