First off, I am new to this forum as well as pistols so I am open to suggestions and advice. However after doing several months of research I have decided to purchase my first pistol, and I had my heart set on a CZ-75Bd chambered in 9mm.

However, none of my local shops carry them or can even place a backorder on them. (I have tried almost 10 different LGS). As much as I would hate to choose a different pistol I have also had my eye on the Smith and Wesson M&P 9.

I guess my question would be is this a comparable 9mm and also is this a good first pistol to buy?

Thanks,
Kahuna

kokapelli,

My intent would be to use this pistol mostly at the range. When not at the range I would also want to keep it as a self defense gun for use at home.

Does this change your opinion on either of these two autoloaders?

forget the eye ... and let your hand decide.

Being able to handle some different models ... and shoot them
before the decision would be .. smart.

I think they are both fine and would just go with which shoots better for you.

Personally if it were my first gun and would be using it as a range and home defense gun I would want my first gun to be on a 1911 platform.

If you like the feel of the CZ75, you might want to consider looking for a Browning Hi-Power as well.

The CZ-75 and S&W M&P are completely different animals. One is a metal-framed DA/SA pistol with a decocker and manual safety, the other is a polymer-framed striker-fired pistol with a trigger safety and optional thumb safety.

If you like the CZ-75, you may want to look into the FN FNX or a Beretta - those are some fairly popular DA/SA pistols.

Personally, I'm a PFSF fan, so I'd definitely pick the M&P over the CZ ;)

I actually think both pistols are somewhat similar in ergonomics and operation (provided you get the thumb-safety on the M&P). They have the same Browning-pattern control interface, and their grip angles and general grip shape are similar. The triggers are different. The M&P will be a lot lighter. Their internals are very different, but that's of minimal consequence for a first gun.

BTW, I was in the market for a new 9mm, and was down to those two. I went with the M&P simply because of availability. I don't think it's crazy to be thinking about those two together.

Thanks for the advice and suggestions so far!

As far as handling and getting to fire the pistols, I have only fired the M&P. I have not been able to hold or fire the CZ75 since no one has on available anywhere. I guess I should just go with what feels right. I will see if I can possibly handle both the Beretta and High Point before I make my final decision.

On a side note to Kokapelli, I have shot and handled two S&W 1911's one chambered in 9mm and the other an E-series chambered in .45. They were both beautiful handguns and fit right in my hand. I guess it would come down to whether or not I would be willing to spend the extra money for them :)

Sorry for the confusion, that was an honest mistake! I meant to say the Browning Hi-Power as bannockburn had suggested.

Order a CZ and try it out. If you don't like it, you can always sell it. Personally I went with a S&W 5906 as my HD choice.

If a CZ 75 is what you want i wouldn't settle for anything else.Keep looking and you will find one.
