Whats better the savage axis .308 or the remington 770 .308?

Savage Axis by far. The Remington 770 is kind of... bad. It's intended for the person who puts a couple rounds through it per year to sight in, maybe takes a deer or two, and puts it in the back of the closet until the next year. Not made for durability or hard use.

770 you say? Yeah take the savage. There is a good thread on here from a member that tried to make a 770 good. I think he finally gave up after two years and lots of work. I would search for it for you, but I am too lazy to do that on my tablet

the 770 is even a worse version of the 710, cheap trash with a rough action. Savage and their low end Stevens are shooters. I own quite a few rifles and when it comes time to go to the deer lease my cheapo Stevens 200 7mm-08 is sure to go with me. I put a Boyds walnut stock on it and it is a beauty.

Both are disposable rifles meant for the guy wants to fire less than a box of ammo a year. At that rate either should last a lifetime if used carefully. Neither are intended for lots of shooting, neither have any resale value, so trading up to a better rifle is not much of a option. Both are just as accurate as the more expensive rifles. If something breaks or wears out you just trash them and buy another rifle. I've read a few accounts of parts breaking on both and it was going to cost the owners almost as much to get them fixed as a new rifle would cost, certanly much more that it was worth used.

The Remington has the worst reputation, but I cannot see where the Axis is a bit better. I'd pass on both. There are many other better options that are only about the cost of 2-3 boxes of ammo more expensive.

The Stevens is an example of one of the slightly more expensive, yet vastly better rifle options. There are no options for replacement stocks for the Axis. Unfortunately Savage has chosen to dscontinue the Stevens 200 in favor of the Axis. If you can still find a Stevens 200, I'd highly recommend one. Though discontinued, there are still lots out there.

Stay clear of both, if on a tight budget you can find a used remmy 700, savage 110/10, or Stevens 200 just about as cheap. All the above would be a better choice.

The Axis is a vastly better rifle, but the 770 makes a better boat paddle Never buy a 770, worst rifle on the market without a doubt, the Axis is no super rifle either but it will keep you on target and last a good log while as long as you don't drop it out the tree stand or give it a saltwater bath. I would highly recomend saveing the extra $80 and getting the real 110 with Accutrigger it is a whole different class of rifle, I have owned several of those for years and have been thrilled with them.

The Axis is a low-end hunting rifle. The 770 is the town joke of which I've never heard anything positive.

Stevens 200 is the best budget rifle out there bar none.

buy a low mileage use remington 700 or even a weatherby vanguard. I have had my hands on a 770 and it is the Yugo of guns.

The new version of the Weatherby Vanguard is retailing for only $30-40 more than the 770 and the Axis. It is a very reasonable choice.

If forced to pick between the two choices given by the OP I would choose the Axis in a heartbeat. It uses the same barrel attachment system as the other Savages, which is known for its accuracy. Isn't the Remington just press fitted?
Best answer: get a Weatherby or save another $50 above that and get a real Savage with the accutrigger. Buds has them for <$400. I'm thinking of picking up another lefty just because they are such bargains.

No contest...AXIS.... I've shot both in .308/.270 and it's no comparison. Recoil was a little sharper on the Axis but it more than made up for that with a far superior trigger not to mention the action on the 770 felt like trying to drag a stick wrapped with sandpaper through a cow's rear crack.

Recently had a Savage Axis in 270 and a Remington 770 in 30-06 on the range at the very same session. The Savage was definitely the better rifle. 1. The action was much smoother. 2. Although its no accu-triger the axis trigger was much much better than the 770. 3. The box magazine on the 770 did not stay in place, it would drop so far as to allow the bolt to totally miss the next round. 4. The axis was considerably more accurate at 100yds with factory winchester ammo. about 1.5 inch versus 3 inches for the remington.
Honestly I can't believe Remington would put there name on the 770. I own several other lower budget rifle and I would save up the extra 100 bucks for a Savage model 10 or 11 with the accutrigger. Walmart has a package deal for $416 for the savage.
Hope this is useful but my advice is avoid the Remington 770 like the the plague.
Also might want to know all the Savage Axis rifles are long action, Savage uses a spacer in the magazine to fit the magazines to the short action calibers, but it seems to work well in mu axis chambered in 223. But I like my model 11 in 243 and my model 16 in 30-06 much better all around.
