To reinterate my earlier post,(if you choose the Savage) go with a the 30.06 long action. If you later want a .308 simply change out the barrel. If you choose a .308 on the short action you will be stuck with .308,7mm/08,.243,.260 etc... The long action can be used for practically every centerfire sporting round made including the magnums.

This will be my first rifle! I own a Remington 11-48 12 gauge shotgun but never a rifle. I will be hunting Elk and whitetail deer. I just want a nice affordable beginners rifle to start out with. So do you guys think that the savage 111 in 30/06 is what I'm looking for?

Yep, Savages are great. and there is no better all around caliber then the 06, some hit harder up close, others shoot flatter at 500yd but the 06 is a great caliber for nearly all real world situations. It is also the most powerful caliber you can get before the prices of ammo start skyrocketing. As an added bonus ammo is available everywhere. If you can find a good deal on a Tikka I would not pass up on it either.

That Savage is a great choice. I bought an 11 in .243 this summer, and couldn't be happier with it. You will like it a lot!

Alright I was just shopping around and I saw a Savage Axis on sale for $270 with a scope. Is that a good buy? Whats the axis like?

It's not a bad price. It's a bolt-action hunting rifle with a simple two position safety, single stage trigger, and inexpensive synthetic stock. The scope is probably a basic 3x9 you could buy off the shelf for $50 or less. It is a safe, simple, accurate rifle. If you are not interested in upgrades at a later date, if you will be satisfied with it as-is (the only thing you can improve on it is changing out the scope and possibly the rings), it would probably be a satisfactory purchase.

It will get you out hunting, for sure. I paid ~400 bucks for my Savage Model 11 with a package scope - probably the same one as comes on that Axis, actually. I will probably change out the stock in a year or three, and the scope is probably going sooner than that. But until I can afford that, it is a perfectly functional, accurate, reliable rifle. The Model 11 is a bit more visually attractive (to me). If you don't care about that, the Axis would save you some money if you're not going to do anything to it beyond zeroing it and getting out hunting.
