Howdy experts- Like the title says- Thoughts on Win Super X .38spl+P LSWC HP 158gr Product # X38SPD

It shoots reaaaaly well in my Model 15 and pretty fair in my 2" 60

Retired local LEO I work with says it is the best .38 defense round out there.

Thanks for your thoughts. :)

Can't go too far wrong with any HP .38+p, really. I'm carrying 125 gr JHP +Ps in my snubby, but I'm also of the opinion that what differences exist only really matter on paper.

Personally, if I didn't feel ok carrying any .38 +P HP, I wouldn't feel ok with a .38.

If this one shoots to point of aim for you and goes bang every time, don't bother changing... nothing out there is really so much better as to be worth all that much time, money, or bother.

The same Remington load has proved for me better opening in 2-4" barrels because of its 50 fps+ higher velocity and the much softer lead in the boolit. Now if the Winchester load proved to be more accurate in some gun I would use it.:)

I like Buffalo Bore's version of that load best, personally. 4" barrel K frame will get nearly 1200 fps. Frankly while I like Winchester ammo, I doubt it's within 300 fps of that.

Is this the load? They say 1000 fps.

"Heavy .38 Special +P Ammo - 158 gr. L.S.W.C.H.P. --G.C. (1,000fps/M.E. 351 ft.lbs.) - 20 Round Box

The new Buffalo Bore Heavy 38 SPL+p ammo will maximize the effectiveness of your 38 SPL revolver."

Look down the page a bit.

S&W mod. 60, 2 inch- 1040 fps (379 ft. lbs.)
S&W mod. 66, 2.5 inch- 1059 fps (393 ft. lbs.)
Ruger SP101, 3 inch- 1143 fps (458 ft. lbs.)
S&W Mt. Gun, 4 inch- 1162 fps (474 ft. lbs.)

Nothing else on the market right now, that I am aware of, that is as good.

Before you buy ammo read article in September 2012 issue of American Rifleman entitled 'Handgun Stopping Power Sizing Up Your Options'.

"Look down the page a bit."

It must be magic. The number at the top of the page clearly says "1000 fps". Is that with no barrel on the gun or what?

Handguns achieve their objective through shot placement and penetration. The LHP +P does well with the latter.

It's the good stuff for .38 caliber short barreled revolvers. The softer lead seems to expand well through my 2 inch or less Snubnose guns, although my preference has been Wadcutters lately I've used that load or versions of it for quite a few years.

I think you can be confident carrying that load, the +P speed and slightly softer lead makes a good combination for for short barreled revolvers. You may want to check on the Gold Dot short barrel loads just for grins.

When this load was introduced in the 70s, it was definitely at the top of the heap in ,38 spls.

Bullet technology has made some advances since that time and the Speer 135gr +P Gold Dot has been specifically engineered to expand out of the 1 7/8" M-642 barrel. This is my current load of choice.

The old FBI load is still a good load for snubbies, but it isn't necessary to subject your gun to that pounding

I carry the Rem LSWCHP+p version in my snub .38s in case I might also have to live of the land :) I KNOW that one well placed (which a Colt Snub is able to do if you do your part SA fire) will drop a deer pretty well at 25 yards.

I'm a huge fan of the FBI Load and I like the Winchester load for a 4" barrel. In a shorter barrel I prefer the Remington FBI Load instead. Nothing wrong with the Federal load either. The Remington FBI Load is on sale right now @ Ammunition To Go. They had the Federal FBI Load on sale last week for only $17.95/box but they are now gone.

As I recall, the late Jim Cirillo of NYPD Stakeout Squad used something like that with good result. Check out his two books; a really good read.

"Something like that?"

The FBI Load is THE classic .38 Special man stopper. It is time tested and field tested and proven effective. IMO it's still on the top SD ammo list. (that and the short barrel Speer 135gr load)

JohnBT:

The BB 20A ('heavy 38'--158gr / 1000 fps) averaged 1001 fps from my M&P340 (1&7/8) and 1020 fps from my 640 (2&1/8") barrels.

I didn't test it in my 3" 60 or 4" 686, but I have no trouble believing their claims for those barrel lengths (at least with allowance for typical variations between individual revolvers).

I do wonder what the pressure is, however--it is beyond 38+P, I am sure.

These tests were done at about 85F in open shade; chrono was a CED M2.
