What are good "cheap" surplus or used revolvers to keep an eye out for?

I'll be at the Fun Shop today and well even getting one thing I often look at picking up another. One thing I'm looking for is a basic 38spc or 357 to keep as a self defense gun in the house. I really don't want to get a semi-auto mostly because of what the price range usually limits one to. With revolvers you can do a little better.

I did have a Charter Arms Bulldog (1970s) that I got dirt cheap. However shooting a snubnose made my hand hurt like hell and I'm a firm believer of anything you trust your life to you shoot the hell out of it. That said I paid under $200 for it (and truthfully I dumped an old shotgun so I got it for around $100) and I kind of miss it..don't think my hand does.

You did say revolvers, right? Aside from the S&W Model 10's floating around, I would also recommend the Taurus 82 police trades from South America. Rough looking externally, but internally they are in very good condition.

I was wondering about those. My local gun shop has one for about 189.

Bring a bore light and work the action with snap caps (if the LGS allows). Bring a range rod if you have one. I've had a dozen or so Taurus revolvers through the years and never had a problem with any of them (knock-on-wood). Can't say the same for the semi's, though.

You should be able to find a Model 10 or the SS Version a Model 64 with a 4" barrel reasonable. Some Model 65's in 357 Magnum floating around also as Police/Guard Trade Ins.

I have seen a couple clean Blued 6" Ruger GP100's reasonable in the last year in my area.

Thanks I appreciate the suggestions. I figure its a good gun to keep for self defense and simple to operate in a emergency situation and possibly good double duty for backup while hunting or hiking.

Smith and Wesson Model 10. They are very enjoyable to shoot. My favorite revolver actually. I doubt you'll ever get such great quality for under $300.

Hello friends and neighbors // In the $300 -400 dollar range there are several.

In the last year I've picked up:
S&W model 65 4" police trade in-- SS .357/.38;;;; Gun Broker $320 shipping and FFl included.
Ruger Service Six 4" --SS .357/.38 like NIB;;;;; Local pawn shop $325 OTD
S&W 586 no dash 4" -- Blued with holster wear .357/.38 ;;;; Local gun store (I visit them often) $330 plus tax so $351 OTD
Dan Wesson (Monson) Model 14 with 2 1/2" and 6' barrels.( no tools) ;;; Local (different) pawn shop $275 plus tax so $294 OTD.

Enjoy the search

Taurus or Rossi comes to mind real quick. My Taurus model 66 .357 35+ year old pistol is still going strong. The only part I've ever had to replace in it was the spring inside the crane.

Security Six
Service Six
Speed Six

Take your pick, any of these variations will serve you well.

if you want a surplus revolver you might beable to find a .38 webley for 200$, i was at an auction this weekend and saw all the webley .38's go for 125-175$ .
