Yes, I did a search and one thread came up from last year. IIRC, The two pistols were new then. Seeing as it has been a little over a year, I would like to get opinions on them.

Of course, I am always open to options. How ever, I do have a few things I need it to be.

My price point being no higher than $700.
It has to be a .45 ACP.
I prefer adjustable sights, Not fixed.
Made in the USA.
Prefer 5' barrel

I know Rock Island makes a pretty decent 1911, But I am really leaning towards one of these two pistols. I have yet to see the Ruger SR 1911 at a LGS so I am going to have to call to see if anyone has one in stock.
And the fact that there USA made.

I know they have the Remington 1911 in.
The gun is going to be mainly a range gun. But would like for it to have potential because I would like to enter competition. I don't know if these pistols will do for competitions but I am fairly positive that a upgrade or two can help with that.

As for it being black or silver, I do like the stainless more but is not the default winner. What matters to me is quality, warranty and CS.
Yes, I know that if I went a few bucks more above $700, I could get a real good 1911. Sadly, That is the budget for now.

I have heard quite a bit of the quality of the Remington firearms not being so great. I do not own any so I cannot comment on that. I do how ever own a Ruger GP-100 and that thing can take a beating.

So far, The tid bit of reading I did on here and a search or two on google, Have been saying Ruger SR1911 all the way. My question to you THR is,

Which do you own?
Which do you prefer if you own both?
If you had one, and sold it, What was the reason?
Was it everything you expected it to be?
If you had to use CS, What was the issue and was it dealt with in proper way?

I can't think of any other questions but if you can think of any reasons why I should buy this one over that, Then please say it. I would like to make a informed decision about this. So far, I like the Remington R1 but am curious about the Ruger as well.

I know I said USA made but I am still open to other 1911 style pistols.
And thank you in advance, THR.

I bought the ruger and its great, twice the gun my old colt ever was. Accurate and will shoot ANYTHING, even steel case and aluminum. My Kimber/Springfield carrying buddy wants one now.

The R1 I shot was decent but it hung up (fte, ftfeed) at least once a mag. In its defense it was used so ?I waited 4 months for my Ruger and am very glad I did.

I looked at both and considered buying one or the other for several months. I went with the Ruger and have no regrets. It is very accurate and feeds all of the ammo I have bought for it. It looks fantastic and the workmanship is great.

I think I will eventually get the Remington R1 Enhanced model.

I was also looking at both and ended up with the ruger sr1911. I am very happy with mine.

Both should be equally accurate and reliable. The Ruger has the Remington beat in fit and finish IMO. A lot of the R1's have some rough castings, and machine marks.

I'm gonna have to check at the LGS if they got one of those STI, there sexy!

The STI Spartan starts out as an Armscor (Rock Island) gun, and is tweaked on a little by STI. So, it's not 100% Made in USA.

I'd get the Ruger, no question. I just believe it to be a nicer, better-built gun.

I would buy the Ruger...The fitment on the SR is very good considering it's price. It seems they wear in quite well and shoot most any profile you load them with. Both seem fine for the hobby shooter and the prices are comparable.

Try to lay hands on both at the same time to be fair. I know both are 1911's but they feel much different to me. Plus I prefer the stainless finish with the black Novak sights and controls. Factor in Customer Service and the street price and it's a pretty good deal.

The R1 is very much a slightly modernized GI model, cool gun but missing some key features, that I think are important in a 1911. The beavertail is much smaller and not near as form fitting, the ejection port is not as flared as much, and the safety is smaller and not as easily manipulated, the sights are standard GI without near as many options for replacement. I like the Remmingtons, especially the R1 Enhanced, but the Ruger is a better value than the standard R1.

No. STI contracts with Armscor for production of the Spartan. Armscor makes the frames and slides to STI's specifications. STI ships all small parts to Armscor and a small group of Armscor employees who were trained by STI assemble them. They bear little resemblance to the RIAs being built under the same roof, no more than a Springfield TRP resembles a Springfield GI model.

If compared to an RIA, picture buying that pistol, having the frame rails welded up for better fit, adding a first-rate fire control group with tool steel parts, an excellent thumb safety and slide stop, tuned trigger and useful, adjustable sights. Could you do all that for the $200 difference between them?

Just bought it this morning so that tells ya what I think. So far what I see I like, hopefully no rain in the morning so I can see how it shoots

After examining several guns that I was permitted to tear down and seeing how Remington cuts the VIS on the frame - no thanks. I really don't think they have ever actually looked at a 1911 blueprint. (or don't believe it matters much) I also just read a thread on another forun where a person called Remington and asked where their 1911s are made and they would not answer that question. Top secret I guess.

Wouldn't tell them where it was being built?
Err....Yeah....Top secret. Lets go with that. I wonder if I can find an SR 1911 around here....Plenty of R1 tho....

Yeah, what I said. Still isn't a US-made gun.

I like my Ruger. My Smith and Wesson is slighlty better made with fewer machine marks and a higher tolerances for fit. And it is a little more accuate; you can see a range report I did comparing the two. Look up "A Father's day Range Report" but the Ruger's pretty good considering I bought it for under $700.00. I expect the Ruger SR1911 to go to my grandchildren. I think it will retain its value many years from now.

From the OP:

Then you:

Yeah, what I said. Still isn't a US-made gun.

I never represented the Spartan as Made in USA, I stated it would be my first choice under $700 and met the OP's criteria. Not anything you said but precisely what I said. A Cadillac XLR is still a GM...never to be confused with a Chevette.

I have one of the first run of the first 500 shipped of the ( Ruger SR1911.)
I have owned many 1911s over the years.
Ruger made a no nonsense series 70 1911 ( 100% made in the USA )
As Ruger advertises every thing you wont in a 1911,
And nothing you dont .

About the only thing I would like to change on the SR1911 is serrations on the front of the grip frame .

The Ruger has a 100% life time warranty for the Life of the firearm .

The Remington has a 2 year warranty for the original owner .

You can’t go wrong with a 1911. I personally prefer all American Made guns, but Rock Island Armory (and all their importers) also make a fine product.

All that said – go with the Ruger. Why? I’m glad you asked!
- GREAT costumer service
- It is a VERY tight-fitted gun
- The Ruger comes with 2 magazines – one of which is 8-rounds, not something many companies do
- It’s all stainless steel (something I prefer, but you may not)

The R1 most likely shares many of these qualities, but my experience has solely been with the SR1911. 1000 rounds in, I can’t imagine choosing anything over it. Happy Hunting!

Actually Ruger has no warranty. They do stand behind their guns though

Love my Ruger

I've had it for about six months now and it runs smooth as can be. I love the look, the feel is great, and their service, should you ever need it, is superb. The gun shoots much better than I do, so I can't comment on accuracy.

I don't own either but will probably buy an SR 1911. I like it very much and believe it offers more for the money than any 1911 in it's price class like the R1 or the Spartan. One thing I like in particular is that the plunger tube housing is cast integral to the frame. My shooting partner had a S&W Commander length Sc that we witnessed the plunger tube falling off of. Of course, S&W took care of it but it had to be returned to them rather than them shipping out a replacement. With the SR 1911, it wouldn't have happened. ;)
