Welcome to the Rimfire Match for the months of November/December! This match is open to any and every 22 caliber (as well as 17 and 20 caliber) rimfire rifle including the perennial favorite .22LR, as well as the .22Short, .22Long, .22 Mag., .17HM2, .17HMR, and 5mm Rem RF Mag (as well as any oddball rimfires that you might have). This match is meant to be challenging and educational, but most of all FUN. Hopefully it will get you out to the range and shooting your rifle. If you have one handy, make sure an bring a friend too.

There are Two Optics Divisions:
->Iron sights and non-magnified optics and red dots. Shot at 25yds.
->Scopes and other magnified sighting devices. Shot at 50yds.

*Note that the distance of irons div. returned to 25yds.

There are Two Rifle Classes:
->Unlimited/Target Rifles (highly modified rifles, rests, target sights, sub-.20cal. chamberings, high magnification optics- over 10x [in the appropriate division] may be used)
->Sporting Rifles (Includes All Non-Target Class Autoloaders, Bolt Actions, Single Shots, Pumps, & Lever Rifles chambered for any rimfire cartridge .20cal./5mm and larger)

Both classes can be shot from any position. Rests/Sandbags/bipods are permitted in the Target Class only. Shooting stick(s) are now permitted for both divisions (either crossed or walking stick style). Use of a sling is encouraged.

25 Yd. (Irons) Target: See image attached below. Scale to "fit to page" on standard 8.5x11in. paper. The objective is to fire five shots at the zombie head. The target is scored as indicated with the "alternate" line also counting as 10pts. 10 bonus points are awarded for keeping all 5 shots in the "red 10 zone" without breaking the line, for a maximum available score of 60pts.

50 Yd. (Optics) Target: Same as above.

If you enjoyed this match and want a bit more challenge, or just compare your rimfires to their larger cousins, check out the concurrent Centerfire Match (now quarterly).

When you are satisfied you've done your best post/attach (or shoot me a PM) a photo or scan of your target with as much of the following information as possible: Forum name (or name you want posted in the results), Rifle, make, model, vintage (if known), Sights/Optics (with magnification if applicable), Ammo, Position, Distance, Conditions (in/outdoors, wind, temperature...). Multiple submissions are allowed (in same or different division/class with same or different rifles).

Self-scoring is encouraged and appreciated; all submissions due before the year 2013AD. ;)

Didn't even think of that, my motivation was a combination of Halloween just having passed and Midway sending out an promotional e-mail that included some free zombie targets (this isn't one of those, but it got me thinking about the idea).

:)

No, just the maximum value of 10, just like the red bullseye (note that this alternate area is not eligible for the bonus 10pts).

:)

First submission for the match. Also my first post. I've read THR for a couple years. I created a username a few months ago to compete in this rimfire match (I had just bought the below rifle). This is the first time I've found the time to get out and shoot before the match end.

Savage 93R17 BRJ
Simmons Whitetail Classic 6.5-20x50
Hornady .17 HMR 20 gr. XTP
Harris S-BRM bipod
Standing; bipod rest on hood of truck
50 yds.; outdoors; ~75 F; light, sporadic wind

49 points

Fun times. Thank you, Maverick223, for hosting this match.

Welcome to THR and the rimfire match, HankWm! Nice rifle and a fine display of marksmanship.

:)

Missed out on the hostage target match last month, so I had to submit some zombie entries.

It was pretty cold & windy today, so I shot these on the club sight-in range, which is around 60'ish yards, but sheltered from the wind.

TARGET #1 Optics Class - Score 50
Harrington & Richardson M12/5200 with Tasco 6-24X40mm optic
Wolf Match Target ammo
Shot off the bench with front rest & rear bag

TARGET #2 Iron Sight Class - Score 49
Remington 40X with Redfield Olympic sights
Wolf Match Target ammo
Shot off the bench with front rest & rear bag

This one was pretty tricky since I wasn't able to pick out the zombie head in the iron sights. To get a consistent sight picture I ended up cutting out 6" of the aiming black from a bullseye target and overlaying it on top of the zombie target. Once I had something aim at, the 40X really shined.

Well, the eye surgery on my right (non-shooting) eye came out just fine, but surgeon says no indoor shooting until next month some time. My friend lost his outdoor range due to a commercial developer buying up the property behind his berm and laying out a new housing project. Dang!!!

Guess it'll be a while before I can shoot that Zombie target, but it looks like a fun one.

I've been lurking but nothing worth making "snide" comments over - :D All the shooting on this one has been outstanding.

Speaking of rimfire magnums, I need to find a .17HMR revolver to match up with the 93R17. I have a Taurus model 94 in .22LR to go along with all the .22LR rifles, but haven't found anything I can afford in .17 yet. They are manufactured, but so far the prices have been a bit higher than my budget.

Jim

Bummer on the Doc's assessment, but at least all went well with the surgery. Hope you find a new place to shoot soon.

:)

Oh I still have the indoor range, just not outdoors. The closest outdoor range that has rifle distances is over 60 miles from here so, with the indoor 100 yard rifle range here, I usually don't bother to drive that far to shoot. Not a big deal, but as you remember, several people (apparently no longer around) used to say I was cheating shooting indoors -- :p:p:evil:

Jim,

Great news glad to hear you are on the mend. I can't wait until your back in action.

Jim you and Mav need to know you have been causing me a lot of pain and work. I have been sneaking out to the range to try and be more competitive with you guys and those dang blasted pesky 17's you are shooting.

I refuse to let the cat out of the bag until I get it all dialed in and get my final review posted to my website http://www.dayattherange.com

Just so you know I am not just kidding --- here is a sneak preview of a target I will be including in my final review of ammo testing I have been doing.
:)
New22.jpg
50 Yards 52 degrees 6mph winds west to east
In my final review I will post a larger picture of the target without the ammo so you can see the groups better.

I hope you and the others here at THR competing in the matches feel good about yourselves. To shoot two targets like this with the different ammo it took me 4 hours which again will all be explained in the final review.

I just hope you all feel good about this :)

Got a chance to shoot this one the other day.

My trusty Remington .17HMR, BSA Sweet 17 off some sand bags. Pretty gusty wind that day but it didn't seem to hurt me to bad. Score:48

And my new Henry Repeater .22LR, Irons, shot off some sandbags. Score:47

Hey man, my new coffee cup from Cracker Barrel sums it up perfectly, "Chaos, Panic and Disorder. My work here is done."

Mr.Revolverguy, I think the Kidd is the one to pick up when you're willing to spend the loot on the more costly ammunition (where it shows a fair advantage in your testing), whereas the 452 clearly proves itself to be consistent even with average SV ammunition. As for me, I'd not shun either, they're both good little rifles that exhibit excellent accuracy...however, if forced to choose only one it'd be the 10/22 custom due to versatility and uniqueness.

:)

Maverick, I read the comments of yours on the Kidd 10/22 vs. the 452. I would make the other choice. A good 10/22 is certainly a nice rifle to own but a CZ generally increases in value or at least they have over the past few years. Even if you make great improvements to a 10/22 it's often hard to convince others that you did make things better if you should choose to sell your rifle later on.

Both are excellent choices. But as you might have guessed from my name I own a CZ but I don't own a Ruger. I own the 453 American. I like the much more adjustable trigger better than the trigger on the 452. People instantly recognize it for being a high quality rifle. With a modified Ruger sometimes people assume the opposite if you're trying to sell it. They think it's easy to mess up a modification and you probably wouldn't be selling a really good rifle. Of course if you plan on keeping your rifle forever then none of this matters much except for the chatter at the beginning of a shooting match (or after).

I guess deep down I trust CZ to have sold me all quality parts too. That may not be true of a Ruger. They have been known to cut a corner or two at times. That may not be fair but it's something I think. IMO a CZ is a lifetime rifle while a Ruger might not be. I tend to think of Marlins as being the lifetime rifles of the semi-auto category or maybe a T/C but of course those are gone now. Yes I know they live on with another name but again can we trust that new company to deliver the quality we saw before?

I have no doubt that some Rugers are really accurate rifles. But some get a lot of money invested and the accuracy doesn't improve a lot. Those are the ones that make people question the value of any modified Ruger on the market. I just wish Ruger sold a really top notch rifle based on their own design. I'd like to see one that shoots as well as I know some 10/22's shoot but with all Ruger parts on it. Maybe Ruger would kill off the aftermarket for their product by doing that but I would tend to trust in a product that a company was standing behind completely like they would have to do for a rifle of that nature.

To each their own; I doubt many here would find either unsatisfactory in most regards.

:)

Glad to see the Matches are still going on.
I havent been able to participate as I had to make some tough choices on employment and it has left me with no time at all at the range:mad:
Hopefully I will get to join in again someday soon
Good shooting guys

Orlando, things have been pretty hectic for me too, but I'm going to keep this'n going as long as I'm able...the CF match I'm not so sure about (it might become a rare affair as it seems to be waning in popularity). Anyway, hope your fortune changes and you are again able to enjoy a little range time.

:)

Mav,
I think what's going on with the CF match is that with the current political climate, etc, everybody is sort of hoarding their CF ammo just in case the supply dries up or becomes ridiculously scarce like it did just after the previous election.

I'm noticing that Walmart around here is already rationing ammo again so I'm picking up as much RF ammo as I can to add to the stock already on hand. My only CF rifles are all .223 now and I have a goodly stock of components & powder so If I don't shoot any more practice sessions than I need to to maintain proficiency l should be able to weather the apparently coming storm.

Jim

I'm still stocked up from the last shortage. I won't go through that again if I can help it. But I will admit I've been holding off on shooting certain kinds of ammo because I think it might be hard to replace. And that includes my really good centerfire stuff.
