July Rimfire Match:

Where you getting that Aguila match rifle stuff Mav? I was able to find one brick of Wolf at our new local Cabela's (last one they had) but so far haven't been able to find any Aguila, locally or otherwise.

Edit: Never mind, I located Aguila Match Rifle ammo for roughly $30 a 500 round brick plus about $15 shipping from Cheaper Than Dirt.
That's where I bought the last batch. Not my favorite retailer (their shipping policy/pricing is horrible), but the price for their Aguila ammo (I buy a fair bit of Colibris too) is hard to beat.

Thanks for mentioning Aguila. For some reason I keep forgetting about that stuff and I've shot a lot of their center fire handgun ammo. It's cheap and it's very consistent. Wish I had a chrono and a good place to use it frequently.
Happy to help. I don't shoot handguns much, but I'll have to give some a try next time I place an order. FWIW their .30Carbine is as good as any, and fairly priced too.

:)

The key is to order in bulk, and combine your order amongst friends if you can. That's what I do, particularly with CTD and MidwayUSA (which they like, because they not only save a couple bucks on shipping but also benefit from my FFL discount).

:)

Just got back from the range - they haven't quite finished getting the 100 yard rifle tunnel back up and running yet, so I shot the 10-22 upstairs on the 25 yard pistol range. I changed glass on it and needed to start at 25 yards sighting it in anyway. Took the 3-9 air gun scope off and put a 6-24 BSA Tactical on it because the BSA's turrets can be set to zero once it's sighted in.

Started out with some Federal "Target Grade". I have some of the Federal "Auto Match" but grabbed the wrong box this morning - It patterned like a shotgun at first, then a fair group and then a bunch of flyers and another group. Not consistent at all except that it was consistent in occasional poor groups. Target order on this one was top right, top left, bottom left and finally bottom right.

I switched to Wolf Match and the difference was almost like night and day. I ran a whole 50 round box through it and the final target was used to move the group to center bull. I wrote the target order in pen and had 3 and 4 swapped so I put the numbers on with my scanner program.

I shot some Armscor "Precision" 40 grain stuff too, but it was even worse than the Federal Target Grade stuff.

I don't know who is making the Wolf Match .22 these days but I've heard it was Lapua and that they are using Vihta Vuori powder in it. I load 9mm and .38 special with VV N-340 and it burns very clean. The Wolf didn't even soot up the receiver after 50 rounds.

Dumb question

HTML:
Nope, you can even use a pair of shooting sticks if you like, just no bipods or formal rests allowed in the sporting class
.

I know it's too late for this months entry, but for future reference if I shoot my 40 year old 10/22 off the crapy burlap sandbags (front only) the range provides...is that legal or not for the sporting class?

No bags, bipods, or rests of any kind for sporting class, only shooting sticks for that one. Resting your elbows on the bench, et cetera is permitted. The purpose is to create a bigger challenge and better mimic typical field conditions.

:)

I finally got out to the range this morning and set up my new CZ 452E /17HMR. No sooner did I get her all ready to go and the sky just opened up and poured! Needless to say the targets were ruined. I tried waiting it out but after an hour I packed up and called it quits. The (much needed) rain didn't quit until early evening so I never made it back. I'll try to squeeze in a trip back to the range tomorrow.

I was hoping to give this one another shot today, but it just wasn't in the cards. Still hoping that I'll get back out one afternoon next week, but just in case I don't here's what I've managed so far:

IMG_6317.jpg
I think I squeezed in the one on the third row, fourth from left, but missed the one on the fourth row, second from left (when oriented correctly); for a score of 24 (Magnified Div., Target Class).

This was shot with my custom 10/22 prone on bipod with scope set to 16x. FWIW I used Aguila Match Rifle and went through quite a few targets.

:)

Very nice Mav! Really wish I would have been home to get in on this months in my usual sporting optics and irons. I even had / have the targets printed. I'll have to shoot them when I can 'just to see' how I might have done.

OUTSTANDING!

I tried it again yesterday, now that they have the indoor range refurbished. They are still having some minor problems getting the target carriers programmed to stop at the 4 set distances (25, 50, 75 and 100 yards) but it's wirelessly computer programmable and their range officer is fixing glitches as they show up. Still no A/C though so it gets pretty warm in the tunnel.

Had far too much coffee at breakfast and the best I could eke out was a 23. Seemed like the lower left circle was always a flyer completely outside of the black or just nicking it. Didn't even bother to keep the targets.

I did try the standard rifle target they use at 75 and 100 yards (2" center bull) with the "baby Dragunov" 10-22 and Wolf Match Target ammo. Got a couple groups under 3/4" at both 75 and 100 yards so I think I'll stick with the Wolf ammo for now.

Glad there's at least 2 of us at 24 now Mav and I was really hoping that somebody would sneak in there with a 25. Well, there's still a couple days left to git-r-done.

Excellent shooting Maverick. That one may be a hit IMO but you know best. You sure the scanner didn't push down the paper? Because they will do that sometimes.

Thanks for the kind words folks.

I'm not entirely positive that the last one didn't make the cut (I didn't use a bullet as a scoring gauge), but it's too close to call IMO, so I left it out. I'm pretty happy either way.

EDIT: Just checked with a bullet, and it's still too close to call.

:)

I took a really close look at the tack Mav says he missed. It definitely shows the flap of the hole pressed back in by the scanner and the grease ring appears to just barely be in the white. On the other one, the grease ring is definitely in the white.

Anyone else with a good image editing program able to call it in and magnify it?

I say give him the benefit of the doubt and the first 25 of the match.

Well Done!

Jim, attached is a fairly high-resolution close-up of the shot in question. The flap is folded down a bit, but I still don't know that it completely cut into the white.

:)

Yup, you're right - I hauled that pix into On Target and put the .224 diameter bullet hole ring right around the existing visible grease ring and it does show just short of clipping the white even though the tear extends into it.

Oh well, I tried -- Dang good shooting anyway and definitely at least a 24!

Jim

I blew up the image and adjusted the color to show the grease ring better. Then I drew a circle around the obvious area the grease ring covered. I didn't make the circle thick so you can see it more exact. Notice how far the circle extends into the target. To me it's clear that the bullet, which would be round, clipped the edge of the white inside the ring. Plus there's a tear there (shows up as the white area going into the center of the target) that shows the bullet tore into the center. If you were to put a pencil into the hole to the point that it showed just how big the bullet hole was without tearing the paper then I think you would clearly see the bullet made it into the center of the target. So it's a 25 score IMO. But make your own judgements. If it isn't a 25 it's close enough that it would be hard to deny it based on the technology we have. I would hate to have my target denied when it was this close. So I'm all for giving it up to Maverick. Congrats on getting a 25.

OK got it
Thanks Mav

QUOTE" Besides, if I call it a 25 what's my excuse/motivation to get out there one more time tomorrow or Tues.? "

LOL, good call Mav. but why do ya need either one??!! Excellent shooting BTW. I couldn't squeeze in a trip to the range today so hopefully I'll be able to tomorrow or Tues. after work. I really want to see what this CZ can do!

Some excellent shooting there guys!! especially on this target. Wished I could have had another chance to get a target in but I just couldn't squeeze it in. Too damn much to do for my youngest daughters wedding this weekend. I'll definately be in on the next one though.
