garand re-assembly question - trigger assembly

I am trying to re-assemble my newly acquired M1 (drove to Anniston to pick it out) and I'm close but stumped.

The whole gun is put together except for the trigger group needing to be put back in place.

I can put the trigger group into the stock and it looks like everything fits until I try to push the trigger guard back down into place. I feel like I'm pushing it down pretty hard but it won't go into place and the little nub on the rear of the trigger guard looks like an eighth or even quarter of an inch short of being able to fit into the slot for it behind the trigger. Am I missing something obvious? I'm clearly an M1 noob. Please help. Thanks.
 
Remove the trigger group from the rifle. Does it close outside the rifle? If the trigger group closes and operates outside the rifle it is assembled correctly. Place the trigger group back in the rifle correctly aligning it.

The resistance and what you are seeing is normal. Smack the trigger guard down with your palm and it should lock up just fine. Don't be bashful or timid with it, smack it down with your palm! Go shoot and enjoy your new rifle. :)

Tight fit is a good thing with these rifles. A loose sloppy fit is a bad thing!

It is supposed to close hard. A stock that doesnt have compressed wood you should have strong resistance as the end of the trigger guard is around 1/2 inch from closing
Hit it with the palm of you hand, it will close
You can put a dab of grease on the trigger gaurd lugs
Look how they did it originally

if it came out it will go back in. I put mine upside down on the carpet and lean on it with a 2x4 held in both hands, but mine is a little tight.

Priceless picture Orlando. If I had to do several hundred a day I would use a hammer too. :)

Sure enough...one sharp smack with the palm of my hand and it's all put back together again. Thanks.
