What a sad day.

My heart goes out to the parents.

CNN just announced that it's officially become the worst school shooting in US history. ("close to 20 dead, at least 10 of which are children")

Only posting this as an update; not for discussion, since not enough information is available. (And, we've already beat the topic of "Gun Free Zones" to death on THR.)

Relevant;

From CT law, the Governor is responsible for the safety of children in schools.

"(5) The Governor shall take appropriate measures for protecting the health and safety of inmates of state institutions and children in schools."

(Apparently inmates are much better protected than children.)

By law, this was a gun free zone:

(a) A person is guilty of possession of a weapon on school grounds when, knowing that he is not licensed or privileged to do so, he possesses a firearm or deadly weapon, as defined in section 53a-3, (1) in or on the real property comprising a public or private elementary or secondary school or (2) at a school-sponsored activity as defined in subsection (h) of section 10-233a.

something has to be done to get guns out of the hands of idiots like this. If these shootings keep happening as frequently as they are, the gun rights of decent folks are going to suffer.

I would request the mods leave this (or another thread) up so people can express their sympathies and condolences, without a discussion on the incident itself.

This is a horrible day.

I can not remotely understand how a person could be capable of something so awful as fatally preying on children. That is why I am a gun owner, if bad people have them good people need to have them too. Such incredibly sad news, I am shocked. My heart goes out to the victims and their families.

Wow. It seems like they've been coming one after the other.
Total death toll at 27, including the principal, school psychologist and 18 children.
Just crazy.

Agreed. Deleting previous post.

This is unbearably tragic. I can't imagine what the families are going through.

And not to be incentive, but if there is any tragedy that will spark calls for gun control, it will be this one. Somewhat reminiscent of the Cleveland shooting in 1989 before the AWB.

Enforcing existing laws doesn't work, as the outlaw (criminal, bad guy, etc) will not abide by laws. Heck, they are committing a felony (felonies), but they could care less.

I don't think anything short of having armed personnel in each school is going to solve the problem. There should be certain individuals who are permitted to carry concealed in such places.

This truly is tragic, but it is not a topic that is in line with the mission of THR. At least not yet. there is far too much that is not known yet and we are not going to have speculation running wild. The best thing we can do is pray for these families.
