I've been looking for a decent semi auto .22lr for awhile now, but have been undecided on what to get.

At the LGS this afternoon, I handled a Chiappa 1911-22 and I think I really like it. Priced at $259, it's a little more than what I was budgeting for a plinker, but I can always save up a little more.

It fits my hand well and is well balanced.

The only downside is the magazine; it felt like a cheap airsoft toy. Actually, I've got a cheap Chinese knock off air soft and its mag is more sturdy than the Chiappa. That is disappointing.

I like the gun overall, and if there are better mags available for it, I might go ahead and set it on lay away.

Does anyone have any experience with the Chiappa 1911-22 to help talk me into or out of buying it? And are there better mags available?
 
My dad had one last year and said it was a piece of junk. He sold it at a loss shortly after buying it. He picked up a GSG 1911 a few months back for $350ish. He brought it down over the holidays and I shot it. Mine arrived at my LGS today and I can't wait to get it to the range this weekend. I'm pretty sure it is the same as the Sig. From the research I've done, the newer ones have the kinks worked out that plagued some of the earlier ones. And it's the best bang for the buck for a 1911 in .22.
 
I bought one of the Chiappas early on. I recommend against it. The mags are the least of your problems.
 
Spend a little more and get the GSG 1911 - .22, much better quality gun. Haven't had a bit of trouble with mine.
 
If anyone is interested in sharing - what specifically are some of the issues you've had with your Chiappa 22?
 
The one I bought worked fine, it was just off 14" to the left at 25 feet. Also 6" low at 25 feet. Other than that, accuracy was good, you just aimed 14'' to the right and six inches high. The rear sight CAN be adjusted to work, but you are pointing the gun to the FAR right and that feels terrible and completely unnatural.

Right now I can't recommend them. If they get the mags better, fix the sight problem and so on, yeah, they might be worth getting. As is? Get something else.
 
If the Chiappa 1911-22 appealed to you, you will like the GSG 1911-22. I can speak to reliability to some degree as I bought mine well used ($200). It has been reliable with many different kinds of ammo and it's reasonably accurate. I have read reviews from owners who have had some problems that the U.S. distributor handled the issues quickly and to their satisfaction.
 
Junk. Worse gun I've ever purchased. Wouldn't go more than 25-40 rounds without a stovepipe jam. I had to pay to ship it back and it came back if anything worse!.

I futzed around with it to no avail, and finally a steel insert that is the striking face of the hammer when flying off into never-never land so now it won't shoot at all.

A Bryco/Jennings is IMHO a better buy!

And the trigger is nothing like a decent 1911. About the only thing they got right was the weight and maybe the thumb safety.
 
I got one when they first came out. Lots of stovepipes and jams!

But the funniest thing that happened,if you can call it that,was after i had about 2000 rds threw it and was shooting it and the barrel bushing broke sending it and the guide rod and spring down range!

Took me 15 minutes to find the parts.

Chippa did send me a new bushing for free,so i put it in and sold it.

Best thing i ever did.
 
Garbage. I got one as impulse buy one afternoon after work and the same night the more I did handle it the more I did not like it.
That pistol is actually a modification in 22 LR of a blank gun made by the same company.


Smelly junk zinc alloy, horrible "blotched" finishing (looks like cheap uneven spray paint).

Flimsy plastic magazine. In order to get it sighted you have to file the front sight. In my hands felt like a cheap toy gun.

I sold it the nex day, unfired, for a very small loss, never looked back.

I got one with a 14-pound trigger and what looked like wear marks on the slide and it hadn't even been fired. The gun also wouldn't go into battery and required a firm slap to the rear of the slide in order to do so. I could also watch the slide go forward after every shot. Mine was certainly a terrible example of craftsmanship. Worst weapon I ever bought. Sold it for a loss.
