.22wmr vs .17's

If you plan on 150 yd shots I'd get the .17. Better accuracy and less meat damage.
This comes from a .22 mag. man too.

At walmart tonight the only ammo in great quantity was 17hmr, which brought me to a question: what's out there for 17 hmr pistols?

I'm gonna guess that there is not a handgun cal in .17.

17hmr is the flattest shooting round you will find. With correct shot placement, it will take down a whitetail.

ahhhhh..OK...didn't know that. Anyway, I just picked up a Savage ss bull barrel, laminated thumbhole stock in .17. Now I'm waiting for it's big brother to come out here shortly, the .17 Super Mag.

The 17 tends to be more destructive but you can remedy that with the 20gr fmjs. The 22 WMR is more versatile for larger game but the usefulness of that is limited to survival situations seeing as they are not legal for any CXP2 class game in any state that I am aware of. All of the 17s have a considerably flatter trajectory and tend to be remarkably accurate so they get my vote for all varmint hunting and target shooting.

The only bullets I was ever able to find to reload for my .17 Remington were 25 gr. HPs. Where can I get other bullet options/sellers?

Re-read my post. In case it's just ignorance, a .17 Remington is a center-fire round that uses a .223 case necked down to .17 caliber.
The OP stated a rimfire round but I didn't.

The OP stated he was looking for a "rim fire" and not something else.

I know a bit about cartridges and not ignorant as implied.

Kachok summarizes it nicely and I would make similar observations. As to 17 HMR pistols, the Taurus Tracker can be good or terrible depending on which one you get...most are OK, but there are some horror stories out there when you get a bad one. The best one out there is a S&W 647. Very accurate, typical S&W quality, but quite expensive too.

Personal opinion, but I like the 22 WMR, I am just not impressed with the .17s. I realize that I may get flamed for my opinion, but thats my thoughts on it. Also, the 17 ammo seems a little more costly.

I shoot the .22 magnum out to 100 yards. past that I'm a bit dubious about clean kills and the trajectory starts to drop fast. Inside that it still kills cleanly on rabbits and hares without the complete destruction of the .17HMR.
Past 100m I would tend to favor the .17. Mine shoots to the same point of aim/ point of impact with the the FMJ & ballistic tips.

More of it around that .22 mag, but I see .22 mag available, too. It's .22LR that's non-existent. SO, for squirrels, i still have a stash of .22LR, but won't shoot it up. I haven't yet shot game with my .22 mag, but I'm thinkin' a solid wouldn't destroy a bunch of meat, TOO bad anyway. If I had to make 150 yard shots, though, the .22 mag wuuld be a bit inadequate, not because of lack of accuracy so much as a rainbow trajectory. Of course, it depends on the target. My .22 mag WOULD lack accuracy on squirrels, be much better on jack rabbits. It shoots about 1.5 MOA and that's adequate only to 100 yards or so max for a squirrel.

I have no clue about .17, never desired one. Truth be told, I never desired a .22 mag and have little use for it, but it has more use than the little 50cc motorcycle I traded for it. It's accurate, a good shooter, so I've kept it. I have gotten to the point in my life I will not sell a good firearm. I've sold too many I kinda wish I had back.

What and where are you hunting "small game" that you're gping to get 150 yard shots, anyway? Hell, I have hunted squirrel iin the oaks successfully with .22 shorts. I could see a .22 mag or .17 on jacks in west Texas, perhaps.
