Ammo to Hawaii

As far as carrying ammo in checked baggage, you can carry an unlimited amount in your checked baggage as long as it is packaged properly (in factory boxes, or containers designed to hold ammo...magazines DO NOT count) and is .50 cal (or 8ga) or lower. Any kind of loose ammo is a big no-no...that includes in "ammo cans."

As far as bringing it into Hawaii, I highly doubt that there's any restriction on ammo. I'd be far more concerned about my firearms in Hawaii than ammo. I imagine, unless Hawaii has specific ammo laws (like certain types are banned) that you should be OK. But then again, I would ask someone with knowledge. Perhaps try to contact an FFL in Hawaii and ask them? You might be able to contact an LE agency there also, and they might be able to help you. A quick google search didn't yield any answers to your specific question, but if you spent some time you might be able to find what you're looking for.

I would readily abide by the 10 round magazine law, if someone were to give me house there. I would put up with a few restrictions to be able to live in paradise.

If you have never had the pleasure to visit Hawaii, don't knock it until you try it.

I have a relative who resides there, so I've been several times. It may look pretty from the natural side, but it is similar to California in it's socialists gun laws, among other aspects.
So I'm knocking it. Big time.

Incorrect. Check the airline's policies. Many limit you to 11 pounds or less. They also have guidelines on acceptable packaging.

I just got back from Oahu. Been to Hawaii many times. While it is beautiful, I don't think it's amazing enough to give up basic rights just to live there. There are a lot of other really bad laws there besides just the gun related ones.
However, if my grandma had decided not to sell the house she owned on Waikiki beach, I wouldn't complain... (Sold it for$4800!!! Ouch! Granted, that was in the 1940s...)

So, yes, I am correct, as far as the Feds are concerned. Considering there are numerous airlines, and each has their own restrictions, I chose to give the FAA/TSA rules since breaking an airline rule is not illegal (they can certainly say you can't fly) and the OP asked what was legal.

Is it legal to transport it there as personal luggage? Is ammo legal to carry in checked airline luggage?

EDIT: Just looked at the TSA website talking about traveling with guns and ammo, and it appears that they've lessened the rules even more. Used to be max size .50 cal or 8ga. Now it's .75 cal, and no size restriction on shotgun shells.

I lived on Oahu for 20 years (until Nov '11) and the firearms laws never bothered me much. But maybe I have a different perspective since I moved to Hawaii from England.

Hawaii firearms laws

• No suppressors
• No concealed carry
• 10-round limit on pistol magazines
• No handguns with external magazines i.e. external to grip
• All firearms must be registered
• 14-day wait on any handgun purchase

A long gun permit is good for one year and you can buy a rifle or shotgun (or both, or many) and walk out of the store with them but they must be registered with HPD. I always felt that it was kind of stupid to have to wait for 14 days to buy a handgun if you already own a handgun. However, HPD contacts the doctor listed on the "permit to acquire" each time to make sure that nothing has changed re your mental state. My doctor and I would have long conversations about the numerous handguns I'd purchased since the last visit. He was always interested in what I had bought since he was a shooter too.

Wow. You had to have a doctor certify your mental state, and that didn't bother you?! As a doctor, I am incensed by ridiculous opinions issued by really, really bad socialist groups (specifically the AMA and the American Pediatric Association) that doctors should be asking their patients about guns in the home. There is ZERO evidence to support that doing so has any effect on anything (other than annoying the hell out of intelligent patients), and it is a blatant violation of privacy. The reason they do it is because it is a permanent RECORD of gun owners that the government has direct access to. Even states that prohibit keeping track of background checks keep track of this.
