What is the coating they use on the aluminum frame on the new air weights? I thought I'd try Dads new ultrasonic cleaner on it...bad idear :banghead: Guess ill run it for a long time, and see if it'll strip the whole thing.:cuss:

Our Shop sent a few back that did that. Call Smith & Wesson. Tell them what happened and ask if they will warranty it. They replaced some and refinished some that we sent.

It will corrode. Alloy frames get coated or anodized to protect them from corrosion.

I don't know what cheap coating SW uses, it's obviously not good enough to stand up to cleaning because I have read dozens and dozens of complaint posts about it. Could be urethane clear coat for all I know.

The problem is that they don't ANODIZE it, they COAT it. My 642-1 from 1996 is anodized, and after all these years and lots of pocket carry, it's just now starting to thin. Even at that, it looks like honest wear. When the coating peels on these new ones, it just makes the whole gun look cheap.

Not too sure about corrosion. I stripped the clear coat off my 638 a while ago and there is no corrosion that I can tell. The aluminum underneath has a matte bead blasted look and appears to me to have some sort of surface treatment.

I kinda feel like I "need" the iconic J-Frame in my collection, but honestly I am turned off by the poor finish job. I guess I need to just find me a good old used one
