I've been meaning to post this, but a while back I bought 10 rounds of "0000 buckshot" from this company... http://wolfhilltradingco.com/12-gauge-ultrabuck-magnum-0000-buckshot-2-34-10-rounds/ . I finally got around to patterning it a few months back. Well, I'm totally unimpressed. It put 3 of its 8 pellets into a widely spaced "pattern" from 40 yards on a 30" pattern target. Don't know where the others went. The load was very light recoil, but I don't shoot shotgun loads over my Chrony (don't wanna shoot the chrony) so I don't know the velocity. It felt weak is all I can say compared to 12 pellet Winchester 00, which patterns very well BTW. I was shooting from my old Sarasqueta double gun from the modified barrel.

I doubt any other choke would work with this stuff and I was skeptical of it when I got it in due to the fact that the pellets do not stack evenly AND they involve an overwad, not a crimp.

Anyway, if you were wondering about this stuff, be forewarned.

This round was initially made at the request of a East Texas rancher to deal severely with the local feral pig population. He needed a round that would guarantee deep penetration and massive tissue damage.

So the ferel pigs are immune to 00 buckshot, and a new buckshot was developed!? Wow, those are some tough pigs.

Well, I bought it for pig hunting on a buckshot only WMA, but that's okay, I'll stick with Winchester 00. :D This stuff, at least in my testing, is crap...or perhaps "gimmick" is a proper word. I wish I could shoot 'em over a chronograph. The recoil is REALLY light on this stuff, but it ain't pushing much lead. I'm going to get a Pact eventually with remote screens and I may test it then if the screens have good space in 'em so I don't shoot the detectors, though this stuff might bounce off.

Well, there's the problem - you tried ordinary "Ultrabuck."

If you'd tried Ninja-grade Tactical Extreme Ultrabuck Dragonfire Operator ammo, maybe you'd have had better results. :D

If zombie apparel, exploding targets,..... was not enough to scare the price of product should have been the "final straw".

That would be great, but according to Texas Parks and Wildlife, the land upon which I was hunting was a regulated WMA, Dixie tri ball is NOT buckshot and is illegal for use on that WMA. I e-mailed to find out.

If I ever hunt hogs there again, doubtful, I'll just take Winchester 12 pellet 00.

You may want to go to 00 buck, 9 pelts of 32 caliber shot. I am using Royal Buck which is rated at 1,345 FPS. Or just go to 3 inch shells if you gun will handle it.

I've tried to handload 0000 buck and it's a very poor fit in a 12 gauge hull. To make 8 pellets fit in a 2-3/4" hull, they must have had to drastically reduce the charge, hence the light recoil.

I'm going to try to adapt some 3" loads into a 3.5" hull and see if I can get a decent pattern out of it.

0000 Buck was designed for 10 gauge. It fits at 2 pellets per layer, provided you use no shotcup. It doesn't fit in 12 gauge no matter how you stack it.

Good luck. Yeah, the wad seems pretty thin at the bottom, too, and the over-wad.

Good luck on making 'em pattern. When I got 'em, I had my doubts, didn't wanna hunt with 'em 'til I patterned 'em. Didn't see a hog anyway, but I'm glad I stuck with the 00 on that trip. I think it's the odd way they stack that doesn't allow them to pattern well, just a theory.

McGunner,

I think some minor functionary saw the company name "Dixie Slugs" and assumed everything they make is a slug round. If there are no state regulation restricting the actual size of buckshot pellets, then any round with three or more pellets and so marked as buckshot by the manufacturer should be legal in a buckshot only area. I don't work for the company but have successfully used Dixie Tri-ball Buckshot on Alabama wildlife management area hunts restricted to buckshot with no problems from the game wardens.

SAAMI Voluntary Industry Standards are not even binding on member companies.

Here is the definition of Buckshot from a major Lead Products Comany

"Buckshot is simply lead shot formed to larger diameters. Sizes range in ascending order from size B to Tri-Ball."
http://www.nuclead.com/leadshotapps.html

I learned a long time ago to get a copy of the state game law/regulation book, (not the summary books loaded with advertising), and rely on that for regulatory information. Yes, I keep a copy in my 4x4 when hunting.

Okay, I'll say it just to give NSA a laugh...

How can buckshot work on hogs--wouldn't you need hogshot?

Sorry.

Has the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department since issued a published regulatory definition of buckshot for all hunters using Texas Wildlife Management Areas?
