Mossberg 500 feed problems 12 gauge

try a full disassemble/cleaning. my friend had one that did it, after I cleaned it 2-3 times it worked fine. he admitted he never cleaned the gun the entire time he had it lol

Yeah that or if you try and short stroke the pump and "be easy" with it i've had mine hang up a bit. When you pump it with authority then it loads fine. I can combat load mine. He did take the wooden dowel out of the magazine tube right? Also he is pushing the slide release right?

I know he can send it to the factory but that's going to cost shipping and time. I told him I would check it out in case it's something minor I can fix/replace.

Shipping and time? I thought mossberg paid for the shipping there and if it was a defect they would cover shipping back. I could be wrong though.

Field strip, clean thoroughly, check for burrs. Take a close look at the arms of the shell lifter and make sure they are straight. And has been said, rack it like you mean it. New Mossies tend to be tight and have a lot of drag at the rearward end of the pump stroke when the bolt hits the pivot ends of the lifter.

I haven't been on the forum in a very long time. However, I want to share an experience I'm having today with a Mossberg 500 Persuader and Academy Sports.

I bought a new Persuader just two hours ago and brought it home to do some basic functionality tests. The thing won't feed 2-3/4" shells and one is completely stuck in the magazine.

I called the store manager who knows nothing about firearms so she contacted her boss (a firearms "expert") who told her the Mossberg is designed to feed 3" shells and that's causing the feeding problem. WHAT?? I tried to explain why this makes no sense.

I told her I'll exchange for another shotgun but she said she'd need an okay from her boss (the firearms "expert"). I restated my complaint that I just bought it two hours ago and, since first contacting Academy, researched and found many complaints about Mossberg feeding issues. I told her this is for home defense and I need a working firearm.

I also reminded her that I'd just spent $900 with them and was expecting to buy more.

Waiting to hear from them again.....

Got a call even before I could post this note: Erma contacted her boss who told her, if I haven't fired the shotgun, that I can exchange anytime before closing tonight. I'll not be exchanging for another Mossberg.

All's well that ends well... in my case... this time... under Academy's ruling... in this particular situation.

exactly where/when in the cycle is it hanging up? I fixed one that was having feeding problems by polishing the inside edges of the extractors, behind the claws. They were rough and too tight, and didn't allow the shell rim to slide up between them (in the cases where the shell went that way). polished them with fine files and india stones and slicked it right up. No trouble since. Have a look at that area. I'd take the bolt out, and just slide a shell rim up between the extractors. There should be some tension but not so much that you feel grinding or have to force it.

The shells hang up in the tube. There's probably a burr or something but I didn't feel like fiddling with a brand new firearm just to make it function properly. I traded it in on a TriStar Raptor. The only other options they had were more Mossbergs or a Winchester. At least the TriStar feeds properly. I'll try shooting it in the next few days.

You could be right... maybe I did get a rare lemon. I did a little research and found many references to similar problems with the Mossbergs but we all know how internet forums work... lots of meaningless posts... probably mine included.

I shot the TriStar today with zero problems... cheap 2-3/4" low recoil 4 buck to 3" magnums. This was with the stock firmly seated against my shoulder and also very loosely shot from the hip. Zero problems. Fresh out of the box with no break-in nor even a cleaning. It kicks more than I'd expect from a semi-auto but maybe that can be tweaked... dunno yet.

In "MY" particular experience (so far)... Mossberg 500 pump "0", TriStar Raptor semi-auto "100".

Again, maybe I got a sour-lemon Mossberg and an extra-sweet TriStar... just conveying my personal experiences.

Yeah... kicks like a non-auto but I'll add a wuss-butt-pad to compensate. I added a +3 extension tube today along with a couple of extra Picatinny rails for a light and laser (home defense)... why not since NO LOCAL STORE WARRANTY? So far... so good.

BTW, the night manager at ACADEMY SPORTS made it VERY CLEAR... this one is AS-IS regarding ACADEMY SPORTS' RESPONSIBILITY. It's nice to know that our retailers are taking care of us.......

EDIT: If my comments seem a bit harsh and unforgiving I guess I'm just jaded regarding what customer service is today vs. what it once was. Young folks have no experience of yesteryear's quality companies so they can't understand why many of us old geezers are unhappy with typical customer service these days.

Big box retailer with employees who are experts at chewing gum while posting Facebook from their I-Phone. Not much different than buying a lawn mower at Wal-Mart and expecting THEM to know about small engine problems.

The funny thing is the manager told me to "make sure the gun was functioning properly this time". Umm... store policy is don't load a firearm in the store. I fully understand the safety issue and wouldn't do that anyway but how am I supposed to ensure feeding functionality until I can load the thing. LOL!!

Mossberg 500 fails to feed

I also bought a new Mossberg 500 12 GA and had a feeding problem. No matter how hard I racked the slide it would really be hit or miss on whether or not it would feed a shell. There is an excellent post from mnrivrat from Feb 23 2006 on this forum that discusses the shell stop and cartridge interruptor and how to adjust those but after examining my gun I found that the elevator was the issue as it had some side to side play and due to that it would not move the shell stop at all when being racked. After I took it apart and "adjusted" the elevator it now feeds very well. (I had tried all types of shells as well as dummy rounds before and after.

I plan to order a new elevator from Mossberg and see if it performs as put in "stock". Just did not feel like sending the whole shotgun back to them.

I do not mind doing some work on my guns but dissapointed that this was needed on a brand new shot gun. (Yes, I had cleaned and lubed it, etc.)
