powder measure question?

Most of the powder measures can be reconfigured to drop either way. Depends on how the handle is installed and where the metering unit is located, front or back.

What measure are we talking about? Most dump on the up stroke now days. I have one old Redding that dumps on the down stroke. I have a new Redding that dumps on the up stroke. Wonder when and why they changed their mind?

There's the best answer you can get without providing us more information. And as Lee asked, what powder measure are you using? There's surely someone here with the same measure that would instruct you on how to change it around.

Most rotary measures can be set up to operate from either direction. Usually it is more convenient to work from the side with the measure, or front. This method fills the rotor on the upstroke, and the charge is dropped on the downstroke.

The key to consistent measuring is not the direction, but the manipulation of the measure. Stroke and tap with even handling going up and down, or down and up. Same speed of motion in both directions with a light tap against the stop.

Actually power drops on BOTH up and down stroke.

On mine, powder drops into the measuring tube on the up stroke and then powder drops into the case on the down stroke.

That is how mine works too. Never tried any other setup. Works fine for me.

James2 has it I think, whatever works for you. Dump on the up or down stroke, what works for you? As far as accuracy I can't see any difference between the two. Inconsistent operation will make a difference, Jesse Heywood has it right.

I have micrometer adjusters on all my drum style powder measures, a Uniflow, Redding 10-X and a Midway Indispensable (discontinued). I prefer the adjusters on the front of the measure where I am operating.

So, I guess I prefer to dump on the up stroke.

Dillon and Q-M: downstroke
Hollywood and Lyman 55: Upstroke
B&M: sideways

I reversed my RCBS to drop on the down stroke. Seems more intuitive to me. You are dropping a powder charge
