.22 Ammo Shortage

I don't rule out "Conspiracy Theory", but it is waaaay down the list. Probably the last and least creditable.

Increased consumption seems to be the main reason, but there are many.

Another reason is unethical business practices by major retailers. We all know which one sticks out, from THR testimonials posted. It is encouraged, allowed or tolerated, in too many cases, for whatever reason.

Finally, (and this does not sum up all the rest of the reasons), the hoarders, scalpers, seniors in line early, profiteers, opportunistic business people, etc., all have their place too.

But, there is a light at the end of the tunnel (and it's not a train). The supply seems to be improving somewhat. Whether it returns to "normal" (whatever that is), can be discussed and disputed for a very long time. The short answer is, nobody knows.

By George, I think you've got it -- the Shriners are buying up all the .22 LR ammo and trading it to aliens for little, tiny cars.

I stopped a local Walmart in Chesapeake, VA yesterday afternoon. They had 44 boxes of Yellow Jacket on the shelves.

I didn't need any. I bought my limit of three boxes anyway.

Got to do my part to keep the demand up.

I'm still striking out here. I stop by the local WM at least once a week to get groceries and still no luck on .22 ammo.
Some of the LGSs do have some at inflated prices but I still have another 12 days before I can get my hands on my new rifle. Hopefully I can snag some sub 6c rounds before then.

If you were anywhere near me, I'd just hook you up with some of my stock. Others on this site might be willing to hook a brother up similarly, if you were in need and near enough.

Personally, I wouldn't ask anything more than what I paid, and I've bought all my stock from various retail stores.

Academy has Winchester Western .22 Long Rifle 36-Grain Ammunition 525 for $22.
I got really excited and put one in my cart only to find out they wont ship to CA.

Bill's sporting goods near me for a big shipment of 22 yesterday afternoon. Federal auto match 325rds are $27 after tax. They also have 100rd ct CCI 22 shorts, and a fancy Aguilla 22 that runs >1700fps.

Local Rural King had a bunch of boxes of Aguila Interceptors (40 grain, 1470 fps) for 17 cents a round after tax. Bought my limit of 6 boxes (300 rounds), only paid that because I'm intrigued by that much speed with a 40 grain bullet and its the first 22lr I've seen around here for a long time. From what I've read it's always been a pretty expensive round anyway.

I don't know of ANY major retailer that would hold "hundreds of millions" of rounds of any ammo. Assuming 200m and assuming they pay $.04 per round (total guess) then they would be sitting on $8 million of inventory on ONE item?
Having dealt with virtually every "major retailer" in the USA I don't see any of them sitting on $8 million in inventory for any length of time. Money costs money and turnover of inventory is watched as closely as price, shrink, etc. Do they spend $8 mil every day? Absolutely. Do they sit it in their warehouse for an extended period? No way! A few million I have no problem believing but "hundreds of million"? Most of these guys have multiple warehouses to supply their accounts. It would surprise me if Walmart had $8 million in 22 ammo in their entire supply chain and they are the largest by far.

Particularly Wal-Mart which has the best computer inventory system in the world. If there is even a shoe lace that doesn't sell, it quickly disappears from Wal-Mart.

No way is Wal-Mart going to sit on millions of dollars worth of unsold inventory.

And back when I had a spanking new '68 GTO gas was 27 cents a gallon. I could fill it for $5.00. Of course, really hard physical labor jobs paid around a dollar an hour.

Approx. one year ago a truck driver went by a gigantic storage room at the Lonoke AR Remington plant.

He saw very many tall pallets of .22LR simply being stored. There was no indication that it was being shipped, but who knows?

I know that to be true because I heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend who heard it from another that this is in fact true. Nothing could be more credible.
