M&P vs. DPMS budget rifles

M&P has sights. Is an optic in your budget?
DPMS has bull barrel -- on a AR, weight is not my friend.

I can't speak for the DPMS, but I used to have a M&P Sport and loved it. It was accurate, light weight, and 100% reliable. The only reason I got rid of it was because I wanted to upgrade to a 6920 SOCOM. I highly recommend it.

I don't mind the weight. Yes, an optic is in my budget but it would be nice to be able to use it right out of the box. I heard the M&P has a couple parts that can not be swapped out with other AR's. Is that true?

M&P has a lifetime warranty from a company that's already been around for 164 years. Who knows if DPMS will still be around two years from now since AR sales have softened, and that's all they make?

Id go M&P. Its got a great reputation and warranty, and that is coming from a guy who used to have a DPMS (note, I did not have trouble with the DPMS, I just decided there were other setups that did what I wanted, better). Its also setup, right out of the box, with sights and a collapsible stock, so you are ready to go shoot.

I'd go with the m&p. as far as compatability the ar 15 is all standard parts, the ar 10 is not.

I was thinking this too. (freedom group)
It seems the differences between the sport and others is the grip and trigger guard. Maybe the trigger group as well.
Anyone know if the trigger can be upgraded?

I bought my last AR during the Great Gun Paranoia of 2010, at a gun show in Columbia, SC. Paid $900 + tax, and that was the absolute lowest price I saw during 2 days of wandering aisles. It happened to be a DPMS A2 barebones CAR 16" heavy barrel, and it has fired without fail over several thousand rounds of GI/NATO 55 & 62 gr, and reloads. Nothing has broken, it looks and feels as good as, and quality is on the same plane as any Colt, S&W, or other big-name rifle. The DPMS has a 1-year warranty, as does the S&W 15 (page 38 of the owners manual):
"Smith & Wesson firearms are warranted to be free from defects
in material and workmanship. Any such defects of which Smith
& Wesson receives written notice within one year from the date
of purchase by the original owner, will be remedied by Smith &
Wesson without charge within a reasonable time after such notification
and delivery of the firearm as provided below."

M&P handguns have a lifetime warranty:
"We will repair any defect in material or workmanship without charge to the orginal purchaser for as long as you own the handgun." (S&W website http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Category4_750001_750051_757818_-1_757814_757812_image
.

That said, I have no loyalty to DPMS any more than to any other company. I appreciate name recognition, and do tend to look at whatever is considered higher quality if I'm in the market for something like this, but my experience has been that the DPMS I bought is on a par with all the other myriad ARs & clones out there. I'd say you can get the one you want without worrying about differential quality.

Just my 2 cents :scrutiny:

Thanks Maj Dad, you just put me back on the fence. LOL
The M&P is $50 cheaper up front at my LGS. Being the skinflint that I am, that might just be the deciding factor.

My low end DPMS, a sportical, has been flawless. Eats everything without issue.

Edit*

I would buy/assemble a PSA though.

I've never met an M&P I didn't like. Haven't owned the .357 Sig yet. The M&P 15 is a superb rifle, in my opinion.

I,'ve got m&p vtac2 and its double firing and failing to eject second round and having light primer strikes. Sent it back to S&W they say they fired 60 rounds through it and had no issue. I haven't been able to get out to the range to see if it's still doing it. Previously had 16" bull barrel DPMS that ran flawlessly through about 1000 rounds before I sold it to take my wife on a mini-honeymoon. Typically I'd say go S&W, but having issues with their top of the line AR doesn't get my endorsement this time.
