USP, I love the compact versions better than the full-size!
S&W 4006 did pave the way, but as time eased on, others stepped it up a bit!

I have all pistols listed(HK USP45T, Sig P229 40/357, Sig P220 38Super). I love them all. I think I'm more attached to my P229(easier to carry, with good round count). All are extremely great shooters!
I would say to find a Sig P245(I think the current production is the P220 Compact). It's semi-thin, 6+1 capacity(able to use 10rd extended mag for reload) and has a 3.8" barrel.

Do your have an extended ejector, that could make the round try to eject before it totally clears the barrel or port.
I had the same problem with my Sig p245, I knocked off a couple 1/1000th of an inch off the right corner of the chamber roof. I guess Sig didn't take in account of people...
