Its a flake powder. It's not very clean burning either. I think its the nature of the beast. Someone will come along shortly and correct me. :-)

I have one. I have enjoyed shooting it. It is not the most accurate you can buy, but then, its a short barrel self defense gun. I'm sure someone will cry bs, but I can put it on paper freehand at 25 yds with the 45colt and 000 buck is pretty bad news anywhere 15yds or closer. The #6 or smaller...
