500 yards
The ram is at 500 yards in high power silhouette.
Most popular calibers are .260, 6.5x55, and 7-08.
Not a lot of recoil and good ballistic coefficient.
If you stretch to 1000 yards 6.5x284 or .300 mag.
The 6.5x55 is good if you reload because Lapua brass is very high...
I have several guns that were used many many times for deer, elk, and hog hunting and never got anything. I am the world's unluckiest deer hunter. It doesn't keep me from buying new rifles.

20 gauge for wife
If you want to stay under $700 for a 20 gauge for your wife, stock to a semi-automatic. There are plenty of good ones for around that price range. If you want an o/u think in terms of $1500 new or $1000 used.
I don't know about Illinois because I moved out 27 years ago, but here in NJ a "tactical" style pistol grip or a thumbhole grip on an autoloading shotgun makes it an assault weapon. Illinois is probably similar. A regular pistol grip on a wood stock is probably OK. I used to hunt deer in...
In your February 9 message you say that you have a Remington 742 in 30/06. That would be about as good a hog gun as I could think of. I use a BAR in 30/06 with a low power variable scope. There are two reasons: (1) hogs often run in packs (sounders) and you often get a chance at a double or...
Rem 700 rings
I have a long action Rem 700 with Talley ring/bases and a Leupold BR-D scope and another with Leupold rings and Leupold Bases and a VX-III in 3x9x40. I don't see why you would need extension rings on a 7mm mag. I think the long action receiver is the same as my .280 or 6.5x55.
If you want a cartridge that performs well and is easy to find the 6.5x55 fits the bill. It kicks like a .243 and kills like a 30/06. There is a lot of European ammo available, but Federal, Remington and Winchester all sell ammo. I use Lapua because the brass is better than anything from...
The best takedown case for an 1100 is the Remington hard case for the 1100.
I bought one new off EBAY for about $70 last. Year. I didn't look whether they are still available, but you should be able to find one somewhere.
The left side says Lanber Arms. You can buy a new Lanber Arms O/U from CDNN for $599. The new ones are a bit prettier.
The Lanbers are good serviceable guns, but nothing special.
Although there aren't a lot of 3 1/2 inch side-by-sides there are several 3 inch versions available. The Winchester 23 and Browning BSS, both discontinued, can still be found used. The Smith and Wesson and LC Smith (new boxlock) are also available in 3 inch.

Sentinel
Masaad Ayoob has a book titled "Greatest Handguns of the World" There are 21 chapters. Chapter 1 is the 1911. Chapter 10 is the High Standard Sentinel. If you read the book you will understand why the Sentinel is among the 21 guns he considers to be the greatest in the world. The Smith...
The .22 short used to be fired in Olympic rapid-fire events and several manufacturers made guns specifically for them. High Standard made one of their target guns for shorts, but it was mostly the Euro guns like Hammerli and Walther. The short has less recoil than a long rifle and could be...
