One do it all rifle worldwide hunting would have to be the 375. One do it all rifle for the USA would fall to the 30 06 although the .308 would be a very close second place and in many parts of the US probably the best choice. In my old age these are the ones I have settled down with.

One disadvantage of 30mm tubes, they do not make low or low enough scope rings which is a total PITA when trying to mount a low power straight tube scope. Scopes end up way higher than they should be. For big objective high power scopes this is not an issue.

At that price range it becomes more difficult to distinguish view quality between scopes. You have to view them in varying conditions to know what is best for you and it may very well be a choice you would have never thought would be the winner and may not be as pricy. I had two rifles built...

The Ruger rings, while very good quality and work well, are the worst of the bunch in terms of heights. Not even close to being low enough for a 30mm straight tube scope. Lowest I have found are the Leopold fixed 30mm rings.

Best value in a scope in the range you are looking for is the Minox 2 x 10 x 40. If you shop you can get one for less than $400 and if you do your research you'll see they are a top shelf quality scope.
