Our local shop is getting small shipments of powder that gets snapped up pretty fast. A couple weeks ago it was a dozen bottles of HP38 and a dozen of HS6... that got snapped up. This week it was a dozen bottles of Unique, and I'm sure that's gone by now too.
True, those are all good ammo sources, but the OP is specifically looking for JHP rounds. (I did leave out Magsafe and XtremeShok ammo because their prices are ridiculous)
SPG carries Wolf Gold JHP: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/wolf-762-tok-85-gr-hp-50-rds.aspx?a=244623
I also came across these guys, who load a bunch of different x25 cartridges...

You can get the conversion kit for $289 from MidwayUSA.
Do you shoot or carry your 1911 regularly? By having a sub caliber upper you can practice your shooting a lot more cost effectively than if you were use .45ACP. You'll have the same trigger pull regardless of upper, same manual of arms...
Just for storage or transport? You could always pick up a generic case at the gun shop, I've seen them as cheap as $6 or so. How about a tupperware container with an oiled rag/cloth?
Don't buy 20rd boxes at your LSG, do some shopping on line.
50rds of 230gr Gold Dot for $32, less if you buy a couple boxes.

Same price for Ranger T-series +P...
Just for fun I was testing some .45 hand loads out of different barrels. Granted these were soft loadings (ie: lower than standard pressure/velocity), nowhere near +P
Here are the results. Amazing what some barrel length will do for (velocity and) expansion.
Left to right, 3.8", 4.4" and 5"...
The USPs are about as close as you'll get to a 1911 in a polymer framed pistol as far as the manual of arms. You can carry it cocked & locked, plus have the option for a decocker. If you get a .45ACP model in the compact frame you'll have 8+1 capacity, or 12+1 in a full size frame. Not much...
Seriously? You should be able to sell it all day long for $200-$250 if it is in good condition with box & papers. I suppose your local market may not have as much turnover as say Atlanta, so that may suppress the selling price a bit. I just checked gunbroker and they're *selling*...
Hopefully HK-freak either has a FFL, or misspoke and used UPS and not USPS.
It is really strange that only USPS is verboten. If you use a common carrier a non-licensed person may ship a pistol to a FFL holder in any state.
Per the ATF...
