Springfield is a name only. Most of their stuff is foreign made. You could get him a Browning Pro-9, the "Browning" version of the FN FNP, but Browning is owned by FN Herstal now. You could wait a bit and get the Beretta PX4 Compact that is coming out. It should be made in Maryland, though...

This depends on what you mean by effective range. Do you care about the power of the range as it progresses in flight over time or the ability to score a hit, due to it being reasonably accurate?

Beretta Neos. They look like space guns, strip like magic and group very well. Get the INOX as the black finish is nothing to write home about. SOME day, Beretta is going to get the carbine kit out for it.

Beretta Neos (spring for the INOX). They are EASY to disassemble and reassemble. When you have done it a few times, you can take it apart and put it back together in under a minute or so.
