My father kills coyotes monthly with his Savage 17hmr here in SD. Typically in the 100-150 yard range. He and I would rather have a .223 but the 17 makes for a great pickup and tractor gun.

What are you planning to shoot out past 100 yards with the rifle? IMHO everyone needs a Ruger 10/22 and pairing it with a Bushnell Rimfire scope gets you into the whole package for around $200. Could go out and buy a used high power and scope with the money left over for the 100-400 yard range...
