You are missing a barrel length choice

All the above.

Think of Dan Wesson's interchangeable barrels.

Lost Sheep

5 inches.

Great accuracy, power, and control when we're talking magnums, but not so bulky it's a boat anchor.

Depends on the size of the frame.

I don't care much for small frame guns, say a "J-frame" Smith & Wesson, with a barrel more than 2".

But, generally speaking, 4" is the perfect spot. For a double action anyway. I want nothing longer, and not much shorter.

For a single action 4 3/4-5 1/2 is about right.

I was thinking that 3" covers both large and small frame, all steel and lightweight. It is also the better length for clearing a holster when drawn from high and tight.

First and foremost I always wanted (and still do), a S&W Model 27 with a 5" barrel. Next in line would be a Model 686 with a 3" barrel. And I still have a certain fascination with S&W J frames with 3" barrels as well.

My favorites are 2", 3", 4", 5", 6", and 7.5"! :)

Different tools for different jobs.

I chose 4", because it's my favorite.

I know it's my favorite because I own Dan Wesson revolvers, and I have shot them with 8/6/4/2-1/2" for many years.

If I could have what I want...

For a NOT pocket revolver, I say 5". I'm still kicking myself for not buying that model 29 back in when, 1982 that I saw at the store...

As others have said, sweet spot. I'd shoot it a lot, and enjoy it, I'd hunt with it, I'd make it my zombie gun, and in a pinch, if I didn't have, say, a model 36 for "discreet" carry, it might even work for that in the winter.

Same goes for any revolver IMO, K-frame and up.

J-frames not so much, really 3" would do fine, so that would be my second vote.

Except for rimfires of course, which oughta be, again, 5" or maybe even 6".

With our stupid gun laws here in Canada 4.25" is the shortest we can have as anything shorter would be just too damn dangerous to have anymore. 4.25" is a restricted handgun and shorter is prohibited.
My 686 is 4.25 and is balanced pretty good.

Yet you can have a shotgun with as short a barrel as you want, unregistered, while the US makes that a crime worthy of executing your wife and infant child.

I like them a tad long. For j frame I like 3" never had a 4" j frame but I feel like I would like that too, but 3" is tops on concealable guns in my mind. Jumping up to a k frame I like them at 6 inches. L frame I like 8 inches. The only x frame I have shot was a long barrel, I think around 12" from the TC custom shop. I would want less, but not much. I think 9" would be ideal.

Then again I do shoot a 15" buntline.

4" isn't perfect for everything, but I can do about anything with it from CCW, hunting, to paper punching, longer range gong banging....if I could only have one, it would be a 4".
