I have a S&W model 1500 30-06 I don't shoot any more and want to rebarreled it. It favors the heavies pills one can find and want to shoot something under a 150 gr. I also was considering necking it down but I'm not sure I want to put the $$ out on custom dies. I'm looking at moderat hunting ranges of 200 to 500 yards. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to the forums!

The 30-06 will do pretty much what you are asking. What you have is a long action rifle with a 0.470" Bolt Face Diameter. That places you in the following family of cartridges:

Long actions with a bolt face .DIA of .470 +/-
220 Swift
6mm Remington
240 Weatherby Mag
257 Roberts
25-06 Remington
6.5x55 Swedish
270 Winchester
7x57 Mauser
7x64 Brenneke
280 Remington
30/06 Springfield
8mm Mauser
338/06 A Square
35 Whelen

Not much there which will be an improvement on what you already have. Reaching out to 500 yards and maintaining effective killing power on thick skinned game can be a problem, especially looking at the drop in the heavier bullets. The 30-06 Springfield which you already have is one of the best suited cartridges for what you are looking to do.

Rebarrel to the .270 Winchester that's good to 500 yards with 100 to 150 grain bullets.

Standard dies are available so you don't need custom ones. Resize your 30-06 cases to .270.

I would take a hard look at the .280 or the .280 AI. Either one would suit your purposes well.

for the cost of what it is youd like to do, and your desire to neck it down why dont you just buy a savage 10 in 6.5 creedmoor or 260 remington?.. the end result would be a rifle thats a tad shorter, a bit lighter, much easier to customize and work on that is ballistically identical to 6.5x55 in a short action

Like I said I don't use this rifle anymore, also I have a .308, 22-250, and a .300 win mag. So I am looking for something a little different.. I may just rebarrel to a slower twist to get away from the 220 gr bullets. Thanks for the info all

If that were me wanting to go that route, I`d ask a Gunsmith.
He surely would have all the answers to your questions.

Especially the technical ones. J s/n.

Unless you are emotionally attached to that rifle, why not just replace it? By the time you get the barrel, get it installed, work out the other bugs, so on and so on- you'd be looking at a considerable amount of $ and trouble tied up in a rifle without much monetary value, and have a barrel left over that you will probably be stuck with. Somewhere in the neighborhood of $400 could get you a Ruger American in 270, very nice and accurate rifle for the price. 270 is typically 130 grain projectiles, available in wal mart and fine sporting goods stores everywhere.

If you want 150 or lighter bullets I would recommend a look into the 6.5, 270, or 7mm size.
270 and 7mm-08 are likely the more prevalent options if that matters.

You could always do a 25-06 if you want even lighter bullets but still want to hunt medium game.

May not be cost effective to rebarrel but you can get the exact barrel you want.

It is sentimental but I may just stick it in the back corner of the safe and buy a new one. But that will probably put me in the dog house. Thanks guys
