Well I've been watching all the retailers for sales to get some cci 500 primers as cheap as possible for several weeks/months and am thinking about going ahead and buying a bunch of them from powder valley and maybe get a few lbs of power pistol while I'm at it, 18 some a pound vs 27 a pound local. I have a lb of it un used and may not get to testing it before putting in the order, the elections are not getting any farther away.

Anyways I am thinking of getting more and plan on using it to be able to get 45 230 GN FMJ up to service velocity, at least 850. Anyone like this combination?

Just so everyone knows the small pistol primers are unrelated to the power pistol, all my 45 brass is large pistol and I'm set on large pistol primers, but I'm down to my last thousand of small pistol for 9mm and 38/357.

I stumbled onto Power Pistol a few years ago when I could not find what I used to use. I load it in 9,40, and 45acp, on my 5th 4 lb. jug now, love the stuff. Have had no issues with any weight or type in 45.

Interesting. For rapid fire stuff, transitioning, flashy powders make me lose focus on the front sight. I'd imagine it would be the reverse for me. Slow-fire, take your time stuff, probably wouldn't matter.

Its way flashy in a near max/max load for me in handgun. But 16/17" barrel in pistol caliber carbine is good very good in .40 and w/a Mech tech upper w/the combo. ive been using.. Might try it in .230gr. bullet for 17" carbine next but like a lighter 185gr. bullet. But that's just me. I have a 4pounder left+ and will keep some on hand!

I like it for the horsepower. I load 230 grain JHP for bowling pins. And they are loaded hot. I probably wouldn't share the data. I don't like to have to shoot one twice. Even with a slightly off center hit I can clear them.

While I like the performance of Power Pistol I find the excessive flash unacceptable. If I'm not loading W231 in the 45 ACP and want a slower powder similar to Power Pistol l go to AA#5. It was developed around the 45 ACP after all and does a great job without the excessive flash.

I suggest you give AA#5 a try before you load up in PP.

I've definitely loaded a lot of AA#5 in 45 ACP. To me excessive flash is a non issue when shooting at targets or bowling pins, etc.

How well does AA#5 meter? can it get 230 to 850 easily/safely? It is out of a 5 inch barrel.

I agree, AA#5 is a spherical powder just like W231 and they meter like water.

As for 850 fps with a 230gr bullet, many suitable powders will get you there safely. According to Accurate you can do 850 fps with any of about 6 different 230gr bullets.

Just looked at accurates load data on their sight and it is much different then speer as far as velocities. With a 230 gn gd speer has max velocity at 792 while accurate has a 230 xtp going 869. My lyman manual doesn't even have a listing.

I have found in many cases velocity on both Alliants website and accurate's website to very off from reality.

I'm not saying that that AA5 won't get you there, but I have chronographed power pistol and AA5 both in 38 special and 45 acp and my loads showed power pistol on top.

Of course, that's only if velocity is your goal. If you are merely looking for clean burning good shooting loads, in the spectrum of full power, both work well and #5 will accomplish it with less flash and bang. These are 45 acp loads though, not magnum loads, there is only going to be so much flash and bang.

I've used plenty of power pistol with 230 grain FMJ. It's a solid combo.

That is a good combo for sure. I prefer 200gr swc in my .45 with about 5-7gr of PP, but I had heard that there was another powder that was very similar to PP, except without the flash, is it TG perhaps? Nonetheless, at 6.0+gr you can tell the difference and almost see the mini mushroom clouds at the end of the barrel...

I'm curious, why are you picking a velocity and basing everything on it? IMO 3 rounds grouped center mass @800 fps wins over 3 spaced out rounds @850 fps. Bullets meant for loading the 45 ACP don't require the velocity to reliability expand as,some other bullets do.

Nosler manual number 8 lists long shot as a powder for noslers 230g JHP and FMJ bullets. I was looking for power pistol but none on shelves. A pound of long shot will load 1000 rounds of 230g jhp and fmj bullets. Max load approaches 900 fps, all within pressure limits.

I came across 750 bullets cheap and just needed a better powder than what I had on hand.
