I agree with Jackal, based on the material specs, the PSA is a better rifle. Better barrel, better twist, true melonite, mil-spec bolt and carrier, and it has the polished trigger group.

For $470!

Most of the time it comes down to QC as much as material specs. What about those components leads you to believe the QC will be better and that it the same gas ring issue will not occur with a PSA.

Again good luck but to me the logic seems flawed.

I have that upper

and I love it. it will eat any russian ammo. Now Tula is just plain nasty and terrible ammo. But oh will, it loves WPA.

Linky no worky,
Doesn't seem to be there any more. Must have sold out. I am glad I jumped on one before they did. It is basically like this one, except it is flat sided with no FA or dust cover, and standard furniture.

I'm not regretting what I did, buying this rifle, not one bit. The bolt on the PSA is HPT/MPI, that's a plus.

I don't think the S&W bolt is tested at all.

I will not be an S&W return customer, lol.

Every you-tube video I can find, pretty much says its awesome stuff.

The upper I bought for $189 sold out in 12 hours, glad I didn't screw around getting this.

PSA doesn't seem to have any trouble selling them.

Any critical parts can easily be replaced or upgraded to better quality if you choose.

Enjoy it

I have one PSA rifle, with a spec sheet identical to a Colt 6920.

I also have a Colt 6920. If you took the labels off of them, I wouldn't be able to tell a difference. I don't pound on them hard in terms of round count; maybe if I did, some difference would show up; I don't know. But it seems like a very good rifle to me.

I have tried to find this rifle on the PSA website a few times since, and it does not appear to be there.

They also seem to have a lot of "budget" materials that go into a lot of their rifles, especially the super low price point ones. What you get is very much variable from day to day and build to build. As long as you know what specs matter to you and why, hopefully you are getting a good deal.

So I think you can do well buying parts from them as long as you know exactly what you are getting, but be aware they put a lot of non milspec stuff into some of their lower end builds, I assume to get the price down.

The key components as far as I'm concerned is everything that is inline with the bore: Buffer tube, BCG, barrel. You can go cheap on everything else and still have a good reliable rifle.

Its doubtful they will get the upper to me before next weekend, with the holiday. The lower will be here next Thursday. As soon as the upper arrives, I will lube up the bolt and go shoot it after work one night.

I didn't buy bargain basement stuff, the upper I bought was $300 regular price. The lower was $250 regular price.

The M-16 bolt carrier with Carpenter 158 bolt was $104 with charging handle.

They just put on one hell of a sale.

If I need the enhanced extractor kit, I have one from BCM sitting here, cost me 10 bucks.

While PSA has a great reputation I have had trouble with a parts kit and a bolt carrier group from them. Both out of spec. I hope you have better luck than I did. To be fair they are offering to fix or replace the bolt and I made the parts work ok.
IMHO, QC on many of the low price guns is more up to the customer than the seller. Obviously the parts were not tested before shipping. I also have had problems on occasion from major brand names that required returns for repair. Sometimes things slip through with all of them.

I guess that is what I was saying. Just because the spec looks better there is no guarnteee that the rifle will be better. PSA sells a lot of stuff and most of it runs just fine but their builds always seem to be the flavor of the month. The suppliers are not always the same and their offering change constantly based on what they can get. It is hard to keep track of exactly what you are buying. IMHO

I had to jump on the bandwagon and buy another complete PSA 5.56 11 1/2" SBR upper. Hard to beat $299

I didn't buy bargain basement stuff

Well, the thing is that

They're having a Memorial Day Sale and I just built a complete AR-15 for $443 shipped......that's awesome!

PSA Blem Lower with enhanced trigger = $150
Melonite Freedom Upper 1:7 twist = $189
M-16 Bolt Carrier with Charging Handle = $104

A freedom part from PSA is quite literally the definition of bargain basement. PSA is PSA to begin with, and then they cycle through even more inconsistent cost cutting unknown brands like PTAC and Freedom

I'm suspecting the gas block let go, because it will not chamber a round after the first round is fired and ejected.

Its going bye-bye anyway, the PSA is just as good, if not better for $200 less money.

Its a 1:7 twist, versus a 1:9 twist.....which means I can shoot 75 and 77 grain bullets.

It seems pretty weird to proclaim a rifle you haven't even received the parts for yet, that is bargain basement, as superior to a S&W because the S&W had a failure after 2,000 rounds

Even if you just look at the very small sample size that is your two rifles, the very least you need to do is put 2,000 rounds through the Freedom rifle before comparing them.

I agree, but obviously something slipped through S&W's quality control on my rifle.

I'm never one to pass up a screaming deal, we'll see how she shoots when I get it put together.

I have a PayPal freedom upper 16" stainless barrel. I put it on an Anderson lower I built. It shoots better than I can. I have about 2500 rounds through it with zero issues. I would buy another tomorrow. Good stuff as far as I can say.

Glad to hear it scallop....I'm feeling good about this whole deal!

The upper was charged to my credit card today, so it should ship out on Tuesday.....really hope I can put this thing together next friday night and shoot it next weekend.

Well, thanks for getting me all worked up now and making me go buy another.

They (PSA) had the same complete Magpul MOE blem lower I bought a couple of years ago on sale again yesterday. I had to fight the urge to buy another one. The first one, also a blem, was pretty much perfect. I couldn't find a thing wrong with it anywhere. I bought a Beretta 92FS from some place about 10 years ago, marked as a "blem" too, but like the PSA lower, I couldn't see a mark on it.

A buddy bought a PSA Freedom upper on sale and has been very happy with it. He isn't going to run it hard, and it will be a few years before he gets 2K rounds through it, but he is happy and it should work well for him. I did tell him to stay away from PTAC, which is PSAs "bargain" line. Of course, I have another buddy with one of those, and so far so good.

Things happen with mechanical devices, even good ones.

I had a premium PSA upper with the FN barrel that I gave to my son. He has had nothing but success with it. He's probably got 2Kish rounds through it.

I have not put 2K through my Bravo Co upper. So far so good. :)

The M&P is junk, based on a serious failure at 2000 rounds.
Out of how many rifles turned out? I still say you are being a bit hard on them. I would recommend a S&W or a PSA to a friend.

That said, you did good on building a nice AR for a nice price. It should serve you well, but again, it's only a mechanical device. :)
