S&W Model 66-2

I respectfully submit a portion of another one of Dave Campbell's knowledgeable articles on S&W:

A Look Back at the Smith & Wesson Model 66

The Model 66 without a dash came out in 1970; seven years later the Model 66-1 appeared with the gas ring attached to the cylinder rather than the yoke. The year 1982 gave us the Model 66-2 which eliminated pinned barrels and recessed cylinders. In 1986 the Model 66-3 with a new yoke retention system/radius stud package/hammer nose bushing and floating hand came to the marketplace. Eight years later in 1994 the Model 66-4 had a slightly different rear sight leaf, a relocated drilling and taping of the frame for the rear sight, along with optional Hogue grips and a change in the extractor. The Model 66-5 introduced in 1998 brought us a change in frame design: eliminating the cylinder-stop stud, the elimination of serrated tangs, a change to a MIM hammer with a floating firing pin, along with changes in the internal lockwork. The dreaded internal lock—a.k.a. Hillary Hole—was foisted upon us in 2002 yielding the Model 66-6, the Model 66-7 featured a two-piece barrel and more internal lock mechanisms. This year the Model 66-8 was brought to the market.

I do not wish to debate who is or isn't correct, here; only to introduce another perspective on the subject of manufacture date. I am certainly no expert.

:)

I'm no expert either and I did see the M66-2 was released in 1982 but the serial number the OP gave us is reported to be from 1975. In another thread started by the OP in the handguns section of the I forum he called the revolver a M66-262. Seeing that makes me think he got the dash number wrong so I went with the serial number provided.

I enjoy Dave Campbell's work for American Rifleman. It is possible, however, that he may have it wrong... I'm going to go stand over there while all this shakes out.

Interesting. I have a 4 inch 66-1 I bought used a couple years ago and it had some aftermarket grips on it although the original grips were in the box which I also got. I put the original grips back on it. The bag for the aftermarket grips had a receipt dated June 1980 in it. It is serial number 37K4xxx.

That chart above seems to have been lifted from THR. Here's the thread if someone wants to read more:

I would suggest that if you are to date a model 66 you should use Hoppes- clensoil and or ballistol.....

Somethings not right, as ArchAngelCD pointed out. The model 66-2 was first made in 1982, and the serial numbers used started with 3 alphabet characters followed by 4 numbers. So, it's either a mistake with the model number or a mistake with the serial number.
