I traded for a 1977 Colt Police Positive Special tonight. I only paid $275 for the Glock a while ago, so I didn't have much invested. We are both happy. It has a 4" heavy barrel, and the finish needs cleaned up. It had small patches of rust in a few areas, but the pitting underneath is non-existant. I cleaned the rust off, but need to use some Flitz on the whole gun. The lock-up is very tight. The gun appears to be shot very little. The guy was in his late 50's and said it was his Dad's revolver. It was in a gun case, probably for years-hence the finish.

My wife wanted a revolver, so the Glock was on the chopping block to make room in the budget. I was hoping for a 3" 6 shot revolver, like a model 64 Smith. This one popped up and I am glad. I have a 6" Colt Diamondback .22 that she can train on, and use the Police Positive for her drawer gun. It has a good balance, but a 3" world make it the cat's meow!

Since I have the world renown Frank Glenn nearby, I think I will eventually have him do his magic on this gun. I see a 3" barrel, dovetail front sight, and a Metalife hard chrome refinish so it will never rust again. Seeing how I've owned my Diamondback for 30 years and had it Hard Chromed as well, I'm not worried about the value of the .38.

Well that's a D Series Colt you don't see very often. Sounds like you made out pretty decently with the trade. Have some work done to it, get it set up the way you want it, and then have it hard chrome plated sounds like a well thought out plan. Let us know how everything goes when you get it all finished.

3" was a detective special

Rarer than that was the not often seen 3" detective special with a heavy shrouded barrel. Sometimes one can find the barrel by itself for sale. That would be the least costly route. I was just out shooting my nickel 1977 police positive 38 that my wife shoots well. I would not shorten that barrel but look for a shooter 2" detective special instead.

I found a 3" Detective Special barrel only for about $100. It has the long ramp. I thought about that as well.

I would ask her to shoot it for a while with the 4" barrel before I sawed it off.
A 3" revolver is kind of a cult object but I don't see a lot of real advantage to it except maybe for a desk sergeant or other who wears a holster and spends a lot of time seated.
And I speak as someone who once owned a 3" Colt Police Positive Special from the era of the "pencil barrel" but short butt.

At whatever length, I would go for the new front sight, those looong ramps are easy out of leather but not as good for aiming the gun.

Is this gun for her or for you?

if it is for her leave it alone and let her learn to shoot it. I brought my wife a 4" Police Positive Special like yours. I had Frank Glenn do some action work on it. My wife found the factory wood grips to sharp for her soft hands so she told me to put rubber grips on it. I found a set of Hogue one piece rubber grips at a gunshow and after putting them on her gun she pronounced it perfect.

I have offered do buy her a Colt Detective Special with 2" barrel but she is very happy with her P.P.S. and does not want any changes.

Good question on who the gun is for. It is "ours"- Ha! I'll equip it and shoot it, to make sure it is spot on. She doesn't care, and will shoot "whatever". So, here's my chance to doll it up for me, er, I mean her...

If it's for the wife, and will be a drawer gun, why cut the barrel down? IMO, it's a better gun at 4" than it would be at 3" and you can still refinish it. Or look for a 3" barrel you can swap out, if one such is out there.

Thanks for putting up pictures, Biblethumpncop. To me, these were the best looking double action centerfire revolvers ever made. And the factory grips fit me like a glove. I used to have one that shot like a dream with 130 grain FMJ ammo. The way you can tell that I am an idiot is that I sold it. (Well, I had a very good S&W Model 15, and it seemed like I did not need both, and it seemed like the one with adjustable sights was the better keeper...and it seems like I'm an idiot.)

With a 3-inch barrel in hard chrome, you will have my idea of a perfect carry 38.

I found some pictures on the web.

Here is my 1977 4" Police Positive .38 Special:

Here is a 3" Viper, but would look similar if I had my 4" barrel cut to 3", mind of reminds me of the sexy Ruger Speed Six in 2 3/4":

In my opinion, 3" looks awesome! Now, which one? Hmmm.

This is fun!

Anytime you can trade a glock for anything, it's a good thing. Shedding it for a classy Colt is a win win.

I've been acquiring and shooting these wonderful small frame colts for years. My favorite is the 3 inch. I believe it as nearly perfectly balanced as any snub ever made. I have a Police positive mk V that is also a Dframe and one of my favorite 4 inch 38 special s

I wouldn't cut the barrel.

Colt doesn't make revolvers anymore, and in all likelihood never will again, despite all of the repeated claims to contrary.

Colt may make revolver(s) again, but it's highly unlikely they'll be like we remember. What was can't survive in today's manufacturing economy.

I called Frank Glenn today and we discussed the options. I will take the revolver to him to have the hand looked at. It needs fixed. It cocked fine when I first looked at it, but now the cylinder has to be helped out when cocking.

I used Flitz on the exterior of the gun tonight. I had a lot of rust color on the rag and buffing wheel by the time I finished. After closer examination, I found pockets of light pitting in areas. This gun is going to be a good utility gun! I was thinking of a hard chrome finish, but maybe parkerized is a better choice because of the light pitting. I also would like to find a Pachmayr compact grip. I don't feel bad about modifying it based on the condition. It will be transformed from beat up Colt with bad timing, and will turn into a reliable, one of a kind working gun! I love it!!!!!

I just spent about an hour with Frank Glenn at his shop. My hand needs lengthened. He will have it back to me next week. We discussed a game plan for the rest of the gun. I'm excited!

That "rust" color coming off was the blueing. It will continue to look that color until its bare steel. And then the rag will be black.

Hard chrome would be cool. I'd likely leave it a 4" as a home defense gun.

That is a beautiful old colt you have. I own a pre war one just like yours with a standard 4" barrel. It breaks my heart to hear you say you want to cut the barrel and redo the finish. Sell the gun to someone who loves it for what it is and use the money to buy what you are looking for. The gun is yours to do what you wish with but there are lots of guns on the market that are all ready set up the way you want it. Don't change something that is perfect the way it is! I know nothing I say will change your mind but I can sleep better tonight now that I gave my protest. Lol. Congrats on your buy! In the end, no matter what you do to it, you will own an affective, well made weapon that will last a lifetime. I would trade anyone of my Glocks for that colt without thinking twice! Very jealous!

Well, I "pulled the trigger" tonight and ordered a 3" Detective Special barrel from Numrich Arms. It is being shipped to Frank Glenn for it to be installed. Awesome! It will look like this initially:

And similar to this after it gets hard chromed:
