Picked up a Colt Police Positive tonight

I traded for a 1977 Colt Police Positive Special tonight. I only paid $275 for the Glock a while ago, so I didn't have much invested. We are both happy. It has a 4" heavy barrel, and the finish needs cleaned up. It had small patches of rust in a few areas, but the pitting underneath is non-existant. I cleaned the rust off, but need to use some Flitz on the whole gun. The lock-up is very tight. The gun appears to be shot very little. The guy was in his late 50's and said it was his Dad's revolver. It was in a gun case, probably for years-hence the finish.

My wife wanted a revolver, so the Glock was on the chopping block to make room in the budget. I was hoping for a 3" 6 shot revolver, like a model 64 Smith. This one popped up and I am glad. I have a 6" Colt Diamondback .22 that she can train on, and use the Police Positive for her drawer gun. It has a good balance, but a 3" world make it the cat's meow!

Since I have the world renown Frank Glenn nearby, I think I will eventually have him do his magic on this gun. I see a 3" barrel, dovetail front sight, and a Metalife hard chrome refinish so it will never rust again. Seeing how I've owned my Diamondback for 30 years and had it Hard Chromed as well, I'm not worried about the value of the .38.

I found a 3" Detective Special barrel only for about $100. It has the long ramp. I thought about that as well.

Good question on who the gun is for. It is "ours"- Ha! I'll equip it and shoot it, to make sure it is spot on. She doesn't care, and will shoot "whatever". So, here's my chance to doll it up for me, er, I mean her...

I called Frank Glenn today and we discussed the options. I will take the revolver to him to have the hand looked at. It needs fixed. It cocked fine when I first looked at it, but now the cylinder has to be helped out when cocking.

I used Flitz on the exterior of the gun tonight. I had a lot of rust color on the rag and buffing wheel by the time I finished. After closer examination, I found pockets of light pitting in areas. This gun is going to be a good utility gun! I was thinking of a hard chrome finish, but maybe parkerized is a better choice because of the light pitting. I also would like to find a Pachmayr compact grip. I don't feel bad about modifying it based on the condition. It will be transformed from beat up Colt with bad timing, and will turn into a reliable, one of a kind working gun! I love it!!!!!

I just spent about an hour with Frank Glenn at his shop. My hand needs lengthened. He will have it back to me next week. We discussed a game plan for the rest of the gun. I'm excited!

Well, I "pulled the trigger" tonight and ordered a 3" Detective Special barrel from Numrich Arms. It is being shipped to Frank Glenn for it to be installed. Awesome! It will look like this initially:
