Hi All -

I'm in need of some new cleaning supplies, and I came across some nickel plated brass jags from midwayusa, by Tipton. Will nickle plating hurt the barrel of a rifle?

Thanks.

The nickel plating should not hurt the barrel and using a jag there should be patch between jag and barrel. Anyway, Tipton is noted for very good rods and rod end accessories I doubt you will go wrong with names like Tipton or Dewey.

It can also keep you from getting a false positive using a copper bore cleaner. Bronze jags have enough copper that will give you the tell-tale blue sign of copper even if your barrel is clean.

I bought those nickel plated jags and I got the 22, 6mm, 270, and 30 cal.
Using pro- shot patches I found that it was to tight for using on the caliber it was made for. I had to use the 22 jag to clean a 243, the 243 to clean a 270 and the 270 for a 30cal.
I measured them up with my calipers and they are way larger than my pro shot or Dewey jags. I wouldn't recommend buying them.

Don't get nickel plated brass jags. The nickel is harder than brass and the concern about have a false positive indication of copper isn't realistic. I want nothing in my barrels that is as hard or harder than the steel they're made of.

In addition, you don't need jags that much unless you're cleaning a small diameter barrel such as a 17 caliber. I use slotted Nylon tips and nonmetallic rods with Wipe Out and rarely use brushes in my barrels.

Good point. I've noticed that but never commented on it. Not that I clean guns all that often.
