I am getting ready to purchase a new cleaning rod, jags, etc and not really sure what to get. When looking at Midwayusa.com i see 17-20cal, 22-26cal, 8/32 threads, 5/4- threads, plastic vs brass jags, copper vs nylon brushes. I honestly don't know what to buy so looking for some guidance. This will be used for everything from 223rem-50cal muzzleloader. Right now i'm looking at Tipton carbon fiber rods because i think it would be safer for the barrel?

Also whats the difference between these two brass jags? I notice one has more teeth and is long and the other is not.

The 17-20 cal cleaning rods are just smaller diameter, a standard rod will not fit down the bore. Just get a standard 1 piece 22+ caliber rod, as long as you keep it clean and use it correctly its not going to do your bore any harm. I use the same steel 1 pc rod on everything from 223 to 45-70. An aluminum shotgun rod works nice on a muzzle loader. I like brass jags and usually get them one size smaller than advertised so I can use a larger patch on them. Either of those jag styles will work. I believe the montana jag you linked is meant to be able to wrap a patch around it as well as being able to just pierce one on the end. The ones I have are all like the tipton one. The best bore cleaner I have ever used is gunslick foaming bore cleaner.

Thanks. When i seen the 22cal rod i figured a 22cal barrel and 22cal rod the rod might be too tight or exact bore diameter. Right now i have a huge bag of cotton patches so would you recommend a 20cal jag? I usually use the shotgun rod on the muzzleloader but the ones i keep finding you have to screw an adapter onto it and its knurled and scraped the barrel but i guess that doesn't matter on a muzzy.

Just cut your patches to fit a .22 jag.... I never buy patches. I keep a ziplock bag of old t shirt or flannel sheet material in my kit and cut my own.

A 20 caliber jag will not fit on a 22 caliber rod because the threads are smaller. I have a 22 caliber jag that I ground down the diameter a bit to use a larger patch. I don't like using the little bitty patches you would normally use on a 22. I use 1" square cotton patches on everything.

yep these are larger "trim to fit" cotton patches. I think they get most the crud out rather than push it around. I also cut old t shirt like coltpython but I noticed with the pull through path hoop thingy it can sometimes be a mother you know what getting them through the barrel. Just want to make sure I'm getting the right stuff.

Whatever combination of stuff works for you and gives you a tight fit. For example the patches I have are really thick so to clean my 25-06 I use a 22 caliber jag with a big patch on it. For 270 I use a 25 caliber jag, 308 I use 2 patches. 444 marlin I use a 357 jag with 2 patches on it. The only barrels that I use a brush on are ones that shoot cast lead.

since no one else has mentioned it...

for a precision barrel, use a rod that is the right diameter. don't use a rod that is too small, and obviously a rod that is too large won't fit.
if you want to clean your AK and a muzzleloader with the same rod, i don't guess it matters all that much.

if there's something that makes one jag better than another, i don't know what it is. i'd just get the normal spear point ones, but i've used the others too and they're fine.

the tipton rods are good.

merry Christmas

Make good and sure your rods are long enough! Some of my older .22s are longer than certain rods I have and it’s no fun finding out when the patch is in the barrel.

1-piece Pro Shot rods work well for me, I have their segmented heavy duty brass rod for shotguns, and a T/C 1-piece aluminum range rod with built-in T-handle for muzzleloader.

I use pierce jags with correct patch size and for some a nylon bristle brush, looking hard at cleaning pellets though.
