I have a Nikon prostaff 3-9-40 I paid around $170 for if I remember right and might be selling it. my best friend said he was interested in it and asked how much. I just footed $139 for another scope today to possibly replace that one and was thinking tell him $139 seeing how the 3-9 is only 2yo with butler creek caps.

is this too steep? should I cut him a break say 125?

Me?
I would give it to my best friend to mount on a gun and try first, since it is a relatively inexpensive scope to begin with.

If he was happy with it after using it for a while, we could talk price.

Not too many folks pay much for used off brand scopes, so I'd be happy with 85 or 90 bucks.
Don't think I'd ever see more money for it at a gun show around here.

I usual find leupold in that price range used. 80-120. Vx-2s sometimes just vx-1s.
Me and a used Nikon? New they were 120 a few years ago. Had one unfortunate incidence with the prostaff. I sold the warranted replacement as soon as it came back.

I paid like 169 for it and told him with the butler creek caps $100.

If your best friend gives you $125 he won't be a friend for long. Those should sell for about 1/2 or less than you paid for it.

For reference check ebay... honestly i dont give my friends a discount on stuff they are buying, i am likely to just give them stuff they decide they like.

Personally as a sale id probably ask 80 if its in good shape and 100if its perfect and you have the box papers etc.

Think 50% of what you paid new. Fair for him, fair for you, and he probably won't mind paying half price. If you can afford it, less, because, after all, it's a buddy.

If were were older than it is, it would be worth a lot less.

I'm selling a Ruger 77/17 on consignment at a local gun shop. It has the same scope you are selling. When we were discussing the selling price for my rifle, the dealer told me that the Nikon did not add much value. Said most people would replace the scope. Personally, I would not buy that scope again.

It depends on if it's the current model or the previous generation. Honestly, I've bought several for $80. At $100 it's an average price. It's not a deal and he could certainly find one cheaper elsewhere, but it's not a way out of line either. If he wasn't my friend I'd probably be asking $100 and take anything offered over $80. If he was a good friend I'd probably just tell him $75 to 80.
